I think it has to be a bit more than just time as you mentioned expertise but really an overall measure of contribution should be in place. I know this is hard to measure compared to time but those that had the greatest impact on the project should be rewarded.

Great points especially thinking about the speed advantages indies have over the large studios. The amount of learning that can be done by shipping often and learning from failures is a great motivator in itself.

Hey Jeff, great write-up Thanks for sharing your observations and experiences. OpenFeint is very interesting. I initially thought they'd fall off since Apple introduced Game Center but looks like they're being smart with supporting it within their library and I'm seeing alot of games include it now despite the size.
