Alexander Bruce's Blog

I'm an independent experimental developer (designer / programmer) in my spare time, creating things in whatever program I fancy at the time. I've done work as a modder with UT2K4 and UT3 and have worked in many programming languages. I like to try my hand at a lot of different things.

Located in Australia (though looking to go overseas), I've worked at Transmission Games as a gameplay programmer on Sin City and as a tools programmer on Ashes Cricket 2009 and Heroes Over Europe. I have also worked as a contractor programmer at Big Ant Studios.

I've won small scale Australian competitions such as EGEMOD with creations such as a game called Metamorphosis (a prototype involving particle characters and recursive space in 3D within UT2K4) and was selected to present at the Tokyo Game Show for Sense Of Wonder Night 2009 with my game Hazard: The Journey of Life, a philosophical first person single player exploration puzzle art game. I'm currently also a finalist in Phase 4 of the Make Something Unreal competition and will be competing in the Grand Finals as well.

I'm always trying to get more out of life. You can contact me at alex@demruth.com

I'm pretty sure that what I stated has nothing to do with single player games, nor did I put any emphasis whatsoever on story based games. I believe I referred to Video Games as a whole, in contrast to Board Games or Tabletop Games, which are different. Much like how ...

Erick, plenty of people have ...

Erick, plenty of people have done non-fps and third person character things with Unreal and other Engines . They're called mods, and they've existed for well over a decade. If you're asking whether people have done anything significant with the UDK yet, no, not really, as it was just released.

The fact that something says ...

The fact that something says native doesn't mean the UnrealScript that you have is a native class. It means that there's a native backend to the class, as opposed to something that is purely script. This is to allow you to go back and forth between C and UnrealScript. You ...

This was an interesting read, mainly because I've been going through the same thing for months and shall continue doing for several more months until release now . Ultimately, as you say, working by yourself is indeed a lonely process, and the only roadblock is yourself. If you can't work ...
