  More FPS is Good

I recently read an article that went into great detail about why frame rate is the wrong metric to determine the fluidity of a game experience.  Though I may agree with the general concept, I can't completely agree with the sentiment that Frames Per Second (FPS) is a worthless metric that needs to be replaced.

If we remove some obvious conditions from the equation, you'll find that FPS is a brute but useful method to improving responsiveness.  The most obvious condition is large stutters caused by resource loading or video drivers suffering from bandwidth issues.  Assuming that the game has properly balanced their resources for the machine that is being used, we can get down to the root of the issue.

These numbers are very different for all people so please consider them only for the purpose of this argument.  The cinema experience is currently only running at 24 frames per second, or 24p.  This is considered the standard despite historical claims that a minimum of 46p is required for a fluid viewing experience.  Lots of tricks are being used in modern cinema to continue filming at 24p but playing with shutter speeds of the player to emulate speeds of 48p and even 72p, despite those projectors still rendering the same frame multiple times.  The important thing to note about the low frame rate in film is that the cinema experience is non interactive, it is a passive experience.  We go where the camera takes us.

In video games you have a controller, or a mouse and keyboard.  The issue of frame rate becomes more evident because the game's logic and it's rendering are synchronized.  If a player moves their mouse, there is an expectation that the game will immediately respond.  Assuming that the claims are true, that most people can not visually distinguish above 48 frames per second, and that human reaction times may also sit somewhere in that same window, this means that we have around 20 milliseconds to miss the player's input and have to process it in the next frame, thus causing this perception of lag or stutter.

FPS is a brute force blanket approach to solving this issue.  If the simulation runs at a minimum of 2x the average human reaction time, we are given 1 frame to make mistakes.  As John Carmack once said, "somewhere between 60 and 120 is just don't care anymore," and he may be right.  If the assumption of 48 frames is true, then it means that we only need to sustain a frame rate of around 96 FPS to never have to worry about an unresponsive game.

It's important to note the distiction that I made however.  I am talking about 96 FPS simulation speeds.  There is the possibility that a game could render their games at 48-60 FPS and simulate their physics and process inputs at 96 FPS, but that sounds like a nightmare.  We may have to settle with consuming brute power by synchronizing frames, even if our eyes may only process 60% of the content being displayed.

Hey, i'm glad i sparked your idea for the article. :)

FPS is a metric i would not like to see thrown around by consumers. It's not useless, but its use should be limited to people that fully understand all the effects that go into said metric.

Still, this article tackles the issue of responsiveness and input lag which are also very important in creating the experience for the player. Taking your numbers, having a steady minimum 96 frames per second is a tall order, but one that will please even the most adamant professional player.

In the end, i think we can both agree that a brute approach, like you mentioned, is not the ideal way forward. It may have worked until now, but change is needed.

Agreed. I don't think I've seen a game maintain over 60 FPS since Quake 3. It is possible, but its a question of whether developers will accept the input lag for the sake a few more shiny pixels. So far, that seems to be the decision that most have made.

A big reason for many developers not worrying about reaching the 60 FPS, is because for the vast majority of people they don't perceive any lag at 30 FPS. Those who can are a very small minority, and while they might complain the majority of that group will still buy the game if it is good.

To be fair, the 30 FPS rule was sort of busted a while ago. Wiki "illusion of motion" and the phi phenomenon. There's a lot more to providing a consistent illusion of motion and fluidity then pure frames per second.

Are you guys serious? I play CoD MW multiplayer at 250 FPS. And I clearly notice the difference of the game play experience between even 125 and 250.

You can have fluidity of motion at even 12 frames per second (see any Japanese anime). But fluidity isn't why 60fps is important. It is important because it provides the player with more information about the game state "right now".

I do agree with Mihai that having a constant FPS is better than an erratic one. Thus why some devs choose to "lock" the frame rate to 30 even if they can sometimes reach 60.

Also, no point in having a frame rate higher than your display refresh rate, right? I do see some TV's with 240hz written on the box but I was under the impression that they still max out at 60 fps. (And that the hz was the speed that their backlight flickered at but not the speed of the frames being displayed).

I saw the link and expected First-Person Shooters and was all ready to argue.

Frames Per Second, however? That's important. However, I only think it's significant so far as no lag is noticed by the vast majority of the players when the game is pushed to its limits.

I'd consider that metric to be the maximum amount of players on as many different machines as the game allows (if it's online), with as many items appearing on the screen as legitimately possible in the game under those conditions. Is it hard to test for and maintain that? Yes, but that's no excuse for not doing it.
