Bruno Patatas's Blog

Scripwriter, game designer, producer. Born on June 11, 1981, in Mirandela, Portugal.

Bruno developed his love for videogames, movies and comic books at an early age. One of his earliest memories is when he got his first ZX Spectrum with the age of six. On that microcomputer he started developing his first games, based on code samples that he found in several books and magazines.

Moving to Oporto at the age of 17, he started studying Graphic Design but by the end of the first year he decided that the course was not challenging enough and that advertising was not what he had planned for his future. Bruno eventually landed a job at Abre-te Cesamo in Senhora da Hora, Oporto. There he worked as character and environment modeller/animator  for two tv series comissioned by the Portuguese public tv channel RTP.

After that experience in an animation studio, Bruno went to Japan where he graduated in Animation at Yoyogi Animation Gakuin in Tokyo. The next years would see Bruno involved in several projects in animation and videogames.

Back to Portugal he started working at GameInvest, in charge of their internal animation studio. One year later, Bruno would become a Co-Founder of the Biodroid Entertainment Group, an independent games developer based in Lisbon, Portugal. Among key achievements he produced and directed console games, and created Replika, a cyberpunk transmedia IP that was hailed by the media as the Blade Runner of this generation. While developing the IP, Bruno secured international movies rights for Replika with acclaimed cyberpunk Director Pearry Reginald Teo.

During his career Bruno has been a frequent invited speaker at the most important Conferences in the games industry. Among others Bruno was a speaker at Game Developers Conference 2007 (presented two tutorial sessions on COLLADA) sponsored by The Khronos Group and Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Game Developers Conference 2009 and Game Developers Conference 2010. Speaker at Web3D 2007 Symposium in Perugia, Italy and invited speaker at several Universities on subjects such as COLLADA and Game Development.

Bruno is currently working as scriptwriter and game designer for several projects and he also continues developing his love for technology as a games middleware evangelist. Bruno is also starting his career as an author with his first collection of sci-fi short stories based on the Project Mercury universe to be published on Amazon and other online retailers during this Summer.

@Jeferson The reply was not directed to you, but to Axel and Darcy. Gamasutra needs a better comments system. But btw, that statement is from all the IGN offices. This is the original link http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1216739p1.html

Agreed. I remember on the old ZX Spectrum days to play a Arkanoid clone that was much better than the original. They added some cool new gameplay elements to it that worked great. It was also a question of time to market, as that game was released before the official ...

I prefer 1000 the way Mojang works, than dropping 70 euros for a game that reveals itself riddled with bugs and sometimes unplayable. Mojang is doing it right. The customers have a very close relationship with the developers and both work together to make sure the game is the best ...

If you are saying that there is lack of innovation and creativity in the AAA realm, then I agree with you : I was talking about how developers should think out of the box, and not follow only what market/customers demand. Who knew that in 2011 a game with blocky ...
