Suggestion for making the following of Gamasutra blogs easier...

I think that the blog function is great, I think it offers a huge resource for people to share, comment and learn from our peers.  That said, I have a huge problem with the way this system is setup to "fire and forget"...

The burden for someone to manage the threads they commented on and perhaps want to stay engaged with is a big pain in the ass.  I would have to save links and constantly check back to see if anyone else has commented on those.. etc.  Perhaps i'm missing some amazing solution that's already there, but i don't think so...

Solution...

In each of our profiles.. there should be a blog comment list.  Every blog I comment on should be added to a list i can quickly look at and revisit anytime from my own profile page (that, fortunately is easy to get too).  If you really wanted to go the extra mile, allow a person to "watch" a thread and have that be another list... because sometimes we all see blogs that are interesting, but perhaps we don't really have anything to add, but certainly value to comments being left...

What do you think?

Fair comment, Caleb. We have a ist of other fixes we're working on, but I'll add this one to the list - hopefully we can get to it soon.

awesome, thanks for acknowledging it. I know it might take a bit of work, but I think it would absolutely increase the power of this blogging system. :)

Oh and while we're on the topic, I miss the abilty (or make it a default) to hyperlink each person's name to some kind of page like the pre-blog gamasutra site.. be it a URL or some kind of contact / profile / blog page. It was nice to be able to check out (and be checked out by...) fellow posters.

This is actually already on the list, but I'll bump it up cos it's super-easy.

Sweet. It's going to be retroactive, right? Haha.

I've been having problems with many sites on projects that pertain to new integration of media and games not really fitting in pre existing templates or categories. They often get moved, deleted or seem misleading because I'm forced to post part of an idea to fit it in. I hope one day that will change.

Allowing a person to edit their comments would be nice too and maybe delete post.. but edit for sure. basically seeing typical forum functionality would be a great model to reference...

Also how do people embed images in their blogs?

Oh and report spam! I've seen several bogus accounts that somehow became able to spit out blogs which get RSS fed to users. It looks like you guys are finding them though as some posts are vanishing.. like one that was about "sell wow gold"... but perhaps it would be easier to find them if users could report them as soon as they appear?

I really am running out of suggestions.. heh :)
