Christian Philippe Guay's Blog

Christian Philippe Guay is currently working as a Technical Game Designer at Gameloft Montreal since 2008. He studied video games and Taekwon-Do ITF very seriously for over 10 years. He was baffled to learn that the deeper we go into the experiences, the more everything starts to look alike, because they use the same mechanics with just different contexts (perceptible things). He considers that books give us valuable information about deeper layers of design, but that it can only be properly understood by experiencing it directly by looking at video games with the eyes of a highly skilled player.

He also believes in the existence of a potential unified theory of fun and that most of the knowledge that can help us to understand what makes video games fun is still held by very few individuals, but should be shared.

You are taking it the wrong way. The story is amazing as long as it empowers the gameplay and useless if it limits it. It's perfect if you have a really good story as long as the gameplay truly benefits of it, that's all.
