The right lead platform for a greater future As some of you might have noticed, game graphics are getting stagnant. That could have both a significant and positive impact on the future of the video games industry, if game developers can successfully take advantage of the situation.
Consoles are becoming less relevant than ever before For the past 15-20 years, a lot of gamers thought that it was more better to buy a game console for $300-700 instead of a PC for $800-3500, because they didn’t want to feel the need to upgrade their computer, after just a few months or years, to run games at satisfying settings. Now, most 3 years old PCs, that were once considered high-end, can still run most games recently released on the highest settings. What is even more surprising is how those games still look great on the lowest settings.
Many gamers also felt that game consoles were more user-friendly for the living room, but we also start to hear great things about living room PCs (ex: Alienware’s X51) and the line between game consoles and PCs gets thinner every day.
And it costs so much money to produce high quality graphics that I don’t think we’ll see a huge difference between what we already have on PC and what we’ll later see on both PS4 and Xbox One. At the top of that, considering that graphics are getting more and more stagnant, I hardly see how there could be another generation of game consoles after PS4 and Xbox One. That alone is a pretty good incentive to buy a PC or a new GPU instead of a PS4 or Xbox One.
Despite all the different configurations that might exist, if the goal is to make successful games, then PC is the greatest platform of all. Game developers can patch the game as many times as they want without any additional cost, create free DLCs, fully support mods/ user-generated content that I believe will play a much greater role in the future, have more players Online, feature a lot more customization options than what players can find on console, self-publish a game digitally, etc. The list of positive features goes on and on for PC gaming.
The real problem is not that both PS4 and Xbox One cannot provide those features as well. The real problem is if Sony or Microsoft are willing to do what it takes to fix those problems or not one day or another.
The true power of game developers That said, what I want to truly highlight with this article is the incredible power that game developers have right now and how they can influence the future of the video games industry. A game platform is meaningless without great games to play. It sure isn’t without risks, but game developers have the power to develop their games for very specific platforms.
If what we truly want is a greater future for both gamers and game developers, then we should all develop our games exclusively for PCs, unless Sony or Microsoft makes significant changes.
‘’As game developers, do we have the balls to do what it takes for the greater good?’’
