I work on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity's camera and neutron detector teams. I've worked on the Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity, as well as many other spectroscopic data sets from planetary spacecraft for both the Earth and Mars. I have published numerous scientific journal articles and have served as a reviewer for the Planetary edition of the Journal of Geophysical Research as well as an external reviewer for NASA's Planetary Geology and Geophysics program. http://www.astrumterra.com/chardgrove
As a lifelong gamer, I feel very strongly that games have an opportunity to incorporate scientific ideas and concepts for both entertainment (like in sci-fi novels) and for education. Games allow us to experience science in a new and deeply fulfilling way. I write about this occasionally at http://www.astrumterra.com/blog
I also like to compose music. I remade the soundtrack to one of Bungie's first video games, Marathon. You can visit http://www.themarathonmusic.com for more info.

| Games should be inspired by real science to help build rich, engaging worlds that players want to be in and come back to (like in sci-fi novels). Humans want to experience worlds, which include some real science, more than they want to shoot each other. |

Comment In: Should games have stories? [News - 05/08/2013 - 04:47]

Yes, games should have stories. ... Yes, games should have stories. r n r nI think the point here is that story in games doesn 't have to come from traditional narrative like it does in other media. In video games everything in the environment can, and should, be used to tell a story. |

Comment In: Languages of Experience [Blog - 05/02/2013 - 04:47]

If we can live games, ... If we can live games, then we can understand them through the languages used to analyze life. r n r nOne very useful language for analyzing life/experiences is that of science. You mentioned critical theory, social psychology and education but you could easily have also said physics, biology, chemistry, etc. ... |
