Eric Hardman is a 20 year veteran of the interactive and passive entertainment industries. From film, television and music, to online and educational multiplayer gaming he has managed teams, produced projects, and developed art/animation for Disney, Scholastic, and uncountable other companies as an employee, contractor, and boutique-studio owner. Swimming upriver seems to be a lifelong theme -- from raising a family while working in production (seemingly contradictory) to fighting the ossifying powers of institutionalization and it's effect on creativity and humanity. In his world, there is no separation between professional and personal, but there is time away from the office that includes some fun stuff like: Painting & drawing; Motorcycle riding/exploration/maintenance; Canoeing and canoe sailing; Wilderness Camping; Traditional archery (re-curves and nonviolence); & Photography. Eric is currently an independent Creative Director and game designer, and teaches Game Design.

Comment In: Console makers may have a case of innovator's dilemma [News - 01/17/2013 - 03:00]

Here 's how the market ... Here 's how the market disruption works, though. The handhelds will likely continue to improve, approaching closer and closer to the quality of the consoles. The AAA ecosystem will then necessarily cede more market to the upstarts to concentrate on it 's highest margin products. r n r nAt the ... |

Comment In: Opinion: The Curse Of The Video Game Collectible [News - 10/14/2010 - 03:31]

Collectibles appeal to explorers and ... Collectibles appeal to explorers and achievers especially, and in different ways, but certainly not to everyone. Completely agree that they seem to work best as an option rather than a requirement. That said, as a core game mechanic as in some platformers they can be fun and effective for all. |

Comment In: The 3D Backlash: is it Real, and Who Gains From it? [Blog - 08/24/2010 - 10:39]

3D for gaming will be ... 3D for gaming will be great someday, a tech that we will all end up accepting as having a place in the spectrum of options. Guitar Hero didn't cause every controller, keyboard, and mouse to end up looking like a guitar, but it did seem like that might be the ... |

Helpful and nicely done, Traci ... Helpful and nicely done, Traci I think, per Jason's comment, that different workplace cultures may offer varying opportunities to speak up -- you have to play it by ear and exhibit the kind of social intelligence that will enable you to find those moments to contribute and shine. Definitely do ... |

Comment In: The End of RTS? A Command & Conquer 4 Interview [Feature - 03/19/2010 - 04:30]

I actually applaud efforts to ... I actually applaud efforts to revitalize the RTS genre, and the concept of classes might help. On the other hand, we know how that plays out in MMOs and it tends to lead to formulaic team builds that simply reinforce hard core dominance of online play. Still, it's an interesting ... |

Comment In: Persuasive Games: Shell Games [Feature - 03/03/2010 - 04:55]

Ultimately, most people aren't going ... Ultimately, most people aren't going to think too deeply about why they do things: if an achievement gets kids to brush their teeth, then fine, use it until it stops working. Research suggests that motivations people really care about, supposedly, like money and grades, actually prove to be demotivating. So ... |
