Gabriel Kabik's Blog

I heard DJ Spooky once describe himself as a "Perceptual Engineer", and though it's pretentious and nauseating for anyone else to say it, that dude taught classes on remix culture at Harvard, so I say it must be okay.

I'm a student in game design because I want to make games that I want to play, not because I want to re-make games that I already played and then go swim in my Scrooge McDuck gold vault/pool.  A high school English teacher once told me that I had to "learn the rules before breaking them", so that's what I'm doing.

I think of games as a field, and not an industry.  We are not the producers of consumable content but rather we are enablers of experience.  We have advantages in our field to which no other medium can come close, yet we spend 90% of our work doing imitations of those limited mediums.  Instead of aspiring to make people feel like they felt when they did something else, we should instead aspire to give people a feeling they've never had before, or fail enthusiastically in the pursuit.

My icon was created by me, however it's free for any of you to use if you'd like.

Andrew you are right 100 . The reason it's the big publishers having a conniption about the used game sales and enacting their own absurd DRM strategies, as well as I'm sure lobbying Sony for this stupid pass system are precisely because the games that the big publishers make tend ...

You know, this may be one of those instances where a problem isn't really a problem. Are there really people who quit playing the game because they don't like having to re-roll once or twice to find the right fit I trust BethSoft to find an elegant solution to the ...

I don't know that DJ ...

I don't know that DJ Hero 2 was ever intended to have some mega-launch. If these analysts thought it would come out of the gate hot they were crazy. DJ Hero 1 was a niche music game which I loved, but still , whereas DJ Hero 2 is trying to ...

The ESA even did a study not long ago that showed something like 85 of minors who play M rated games which itself was already small, something like 5 of the population of game-playing minors had those games bought for them by their parent or guardian. In fact, I watched ...

800,000 copies is nothing to sniff at for a company like From Software. Maybe Rockstar or Infinity Ward or Bungie would see that as a failure, but that's 30 million in revenue which is far more than that game cost to develop.
