Ladies and gentlemen the new generation of game engines has arrived. I must admit that I don’t get impressed easily but when I saw the latest demo of the CryEngine I literally slapped myself. Amazing graphics it could be a designer’s dream tool.

The video demo consists of short cutscenes from games created on the engine for the XBOX 360 and the PS3 and presents a little bit of the engine’s features.

I don’t know maybe I’m designed this way but at every good thing I must point out the not so pleased characteristics. Yes the graphics are amazing, yes the games will look better then ever, but (there always has to be a “but” in everything ) game developers will begin to produce these below mediocre games that have no soul so to speak, and the only special characteristic is that they are created in CryEngine 3 and they have incredible graphics. Those are not games, those are sight seeing presentations!

Another problem with the new engine will be the inhuman requirements for the PC. As you can see from the demo the Xbox360 and the PS3 have no problems coping with the graphic upgrade but on the other hand PC owners will need to buy better video cards, better processors and so on. Well I guess that’s the price we have to pay for technological advances.

You should be easier on this new technology. You're partially right that If this happens to be as successful as Unreal Engine 3, then we'll really see many bad games with flashy graphics. However it also means we'll see lots of innovative and great games, too.

It is a only tool, it can be used badly or well. It all depends on the game developers.

When the graphics are the mainly marketing point of a game, we can't really expect anything further than graphics... As a player I wish the competition comes to be about quality rather than budget...

Why that? it's not like the xbox or ps3 hardware gets better... If you've a pc that can handle Crysis you can handle that as well.

Also the video shows more than graphics, like more realistic animations and physics

xbox 360 hardware is from 2005, ps3 is even worse, If you happen to have a good pc you will only have better graphics\physics compared to the xbox\ps3 version, supposed they're not lazy with the code

I'm going to leave this short:

Gameplay has yet to suffer at the hands of advancement of technology, so there is no reason to think it will happen now. You have bad games and you have good games. You have crapfests and then you have extraordinary ground breaking games that set the bar to a new high. Try not to hate so soon.

I think you are wrong, the technology itself is not to blame for the problem of soulless games. Yes Cryegnine3 games will look great, but that does not mean that all games built with the engine MUST be bad in terms of gameplay.
The problem in my opinion, are the game designers / producers that rely on beauty as a selling point. This is becoming more and more not the case. The hit game Left4Dead for example is quite mediocre in terms of graphics but a excellent work in terms of gameplay. (Yes it is not very elaborate, but it works very well.)
