John Hahn's Blog

I'm 26 years old, and I'm a graduate student at the SMU Guildhall SMU.   I was an intern gameplay engineer at LucasArts this past summer, and I will be returning to LucasArts to start a permanent position as a Gameplay Engineer shortly after I graduate in December of 2011.  I enjoy all kinds of game engineer, but I have a particular interest in gameplay and AI engineering.

Games have been around since the 1970s (roughly), which means that if those early developers had made a lifelong career out of it, then they would be in their 50s today. Yet, most shops are full of people in their 20s and 30s. I wonder why this is?

Comment In: New Research Brings Much Needed Objectivity To Game Piracy Numbers [Blog - 10/21/2011 - 10:10]

Well, most people on these ...

Well, most people on these message boards have a generally friendly, cool, and helpful demeanor. His entire tone was very pompous and arrogant. He acted like he was some over educated aristocrat who was forced to talk to peasants or something. It was just odd. Most game developers wear t-shirts ...

Comment In: They Changed the Dining Room: Dragon Age II Analysis [Blog - 10/23/2011 - 12:50]

You use the phrase cry ...

You use the phrase cry over spilled milk multiple times, but I'm not sure you understand what that means. According to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/, it means To regret in vain what cannot be undone or rectified. It's when you actually make a mistake and you cry about it, but there's nothing you ...

@Frank Justin Brown said that, not me. That's his only post in this whole discussion. I'm assuming you had him mistaken for me because you said keep repeating myself. How can someone make you keep repeating yourself if they only post once I'm the one that's posted several times, but ...

Comment In: Ambitious Plans: The Marriage of EVE and Dust [Feature - 09/02/2011 - 04:00]

Whether or not the Dust/Eve ...

Whether or not the Dust/Eve link becomes a phenomenon, it's still a ballsy move, and I applaud CCP for it. I hope this kind of unified universe captures the imaginations of other game developers and they start coming up with new ways to combine different games into a single place. ...

Comment In: Uncredited LA Noire Staff Allege 'Praise-Free' Working Conditions [News - 06/21/2011 - 08:58]

I'm not defending anybody, but ...

I'm not defending anybody, but I think part of the reason why game companies don't like to credit people unless they were there when the game shipped is because there's a certain metric this industry uses to determine the quality of job applicants. The metric is called shipped titles . ...

Comment In: Lucasarts' Hocking: Less 'Fart Jokes,' More Female Developers [News - 07/06/2011 - 05:31]

I can tell you that ...

I can tell you that both my undergraduate and graduate school had next to no female engineers at all.
