John Mason's Blog

Hello there everyone; my name is John Mason, and I'm a game designer,...heh, well, an aspiring one. I am certainly not a professional yet and don't even know the simple basics (though that's why I'm taking the personal time to school myself in game programming and design, and hopefully I'll go to school soon to become certified for it even though I'm not waiting around 'till then to learn the skills, hence why I'm training myself. You know what they say, "If you want something done..."?!? That's me in a nutshell on that front), but I have lofty goals and the determination to make it all a reality. I'm also a pretty big fan of games; I don't have as much time to play as many of the bigger, longer epics out there these days, but I'm always trying to figure out some time to get around to playing them. Yet like any good would-be designer, I have influences beyond just games. I'm a major fan of films, cartoons, manga, anime, and music, and might read the occasional book from time to time. I also have a bit of a desire to hobby in music creation, though between that and learning design and programming and finding some time to keep my head from exploding, I gotta balance out time devotion on those fronts xD. I'm also a big fan of art, and like to draw quite a bit, including the art of furthering my artistic abilities. Finally, I also have a bit of fascination in learning of mythologies and certainly this big void of dark space we like to call the "Universe" (what a wierd name x3); currently I'm taking notes on various aspects of Hinduism and hopefully picking back up on Eygptian deities if and when I have the time, though of course I would want to read up on all the mythologies of the world-including their religious texts if any-before I finally rot and expire away. And to top it all off, I am not shy to read up on the odd conspiracy theory, or two,...okay maybe three but certainly not more than that.....that you know of ;) XD. So hopefully, that's a bit of a surmise of who I am and what I'm about for you all, so that you can get to know me a little better. I'll be taking a lot of this blogging space to, well, blog about game-related topics or topics that I feel transpire to the fields of being a well-rounded designer and thinker, and appreciator of the cultures of the world.

Comment In: Microsoft Confirms 2 GB Size Limit For XBLA Games [News - 09/25/2009 - 05:58]

Very happy w/ the file ...

Very happy w/ the file increase, if it means developers can push their games further. However, this could just as well be a bad thing if you think about it. The file size limit of 50MB sort of perpetuated the foundational thinking of more arcade-style, pick up and play games, ...

Comment In: Microsoft Offering $50 Promotional Rebate On Xbox 360 Elite [News - 09/22/2009 - 08:52]

I dunno about this price ...

I dunno about this price cut Microsoft just adjusted pricing for their product line as to where their best model matches the PS3 in price, but now they seem to be taking it too far. Sure, they want to look like the cheaper alternative, but they're dangerously close to looking ...

Comment In: Persuasive Games: Little Black Sambo [Feature - 09/21/2009 - 02:10]

Articles like this really make ...

Articles like this really make me question at times what the media -not the creators-are up to intention-wise. I'm not saying they're outright racist themselves, but rather they seem to be trying to cull up it's power to generate action and-by association-money. It's pretty sad that-in our society at least ...

Comment In: Spawn Labs Launches Personalized Video Game Console Streaming Service [News - 09/15/2009 - 09:42]

I haven't particularly been following ...

I haven't particularly been following the development of these devices hell I hadn't even heard of Gaikai x3 , but I'm aware of atleast OnLive and now Spawnbox to know what they're attempting. Neverminding the fact that these devices particularly OnLive are hinting at a future road for the gaming ...

Comment In: Wii To Get $50 Price Cut? [News - 09/15/2009 - 05:41]

Welp, all I can say ...

Welp, all I can say is this isn't surprising in the least, although-to be fair-I was somewhat expecting a new line of colors before a price drop. Then again, the only times Nintendo did that in the past was when console sales were actually quite desperate, and the Wii has ...

Comment In: The Rise And Fall Of The Dreamcast [Feature - 09/09/2009 - 04:35]

Great read covers all the ...

Great read covers all the key points w/ just enough clarity to understand the deeper roots of it all. In retrospect, I always get the feeling that money was the one thing that hurt the Dreamcast the most for example, there were plans for a DVD drive b/c Sega knew ...
