Josh Larson's Blog

I’m a “game developer” trying to express myself through the art of the artificial interactive experience. For several years now, I have been led by a vision of what so-called video games can be - one that is not my own. I believe following that vision includes experimentation, constant learning, discovery, and creative expression of my own individuality. The end result is the development of meaningful and spiritual games and interactive experiences.

I can understand your point ...

I can understand your point about diving into pure game mechanics and that being the point of the medium. That makes sense to me. I'm afraid it makes very little sense to me, and I'm not sure that's the point Jaffe is making. The game part of videogames is just ...

Comment In: Video Games as Media [Feature - 02/16/2011 - 04:45]

You don't have to pick ...

You don't have to pick sides, but sometimes it helps to know that they exist. The dichotomy is there, but it's not between games and narrative experience as Eric is suggesting. A narrative is on the same level as games, both of them are abstract structures for meaning. The dichotomy ...

Comment In: The Contradiction Of Linearity [Feature - 10/07/2010 - 05:30]

He is right on. The ...

He is right on. The easy way to understand it is to think about how this medium is distinct from others. Obviously, game rules is not what makes it distinct, games are an abstract system that can be integrated into many media. What remains then is a world that runs ...
