Josh Sutphin's Blog

I'm a game designer (I most recently did Warhawk for the Playstation 3) and I have an intense interest in the field. My goal is to raise the bar for emotional involvement in games by developing methods unique to our medium, instead of aping film. Storytelling is a very different beast when you add interactivity to the mix, and we're going to need new approaches in order to fully realize that experience. I'm currently serving on the steering committee for the Game Design SIG, where I aim to expand awareness of what game design really is (and perhaps more importantly, what it isn't) and thereby combat the too-common perspective of game design as opinion, rather than skill.

Couple of points: First, I don't think we should be defining crunch time as exceeding some threshold number of hours. IMO, crunch is basically whenever your work/life balance is involuntarily, and significantly, skewed toward work. Everybody's needs are a different. I'm a single guy, so my life obligations are pretty ...

Wow. So people who play games that you don't like don't count as gamers I find the Nielsen TV ratings as suspect as anyone, but eliminating people from the sample because they're not playing real games a subjective measure , or because they're only playing games that came with their ...
