I've been in the gaming industry for over 15 years now and filled every possible role from Community Management, Concept Art, Illustrations, Game Design, Level Design, Worldbuilding, Project Management over to Business Development, Marketing and PR. Pretty much everything but Programming and Animation. I can hack the hell out of code, though and know my way around scripts ;)

During our quest to find a partner for our game in development, Oliver&Spike we often get told that the focus right now is to make games for core gamers and that the graphical approach for Oliver&Spike does not appeal to them.

Yup, good point. I just question the definition of core gamer in general and its merit to decide a strategy for your portfolio at this point in time.
