Scott Pelland's Blog   Expert Blogs

I spent 20 years with Nintendo of America in various roles, including Publications Director, Nintendo Power's managing editor, and editor-in-chief of The Official Nintendo Player's Guides. I was also a member of the product planning marketing team responsible for creating marketing strategies and tactics for product launches. Adweek awarded our efforts for the Wii launch with marketer of the year in 2007. Now I've started up an independent consulting service--Scott Pelland Consulting & Creative Services--in which I can share my experience and creative approach both to marketing games and designing them. You can check out my blog at www.scottpelland.com for more info on those activities. I also continue to contribute to Nintendo Power as editor-at-large. Creative writing has always been another passion of mine, and recently I've started a fun project that you are welcome to view at www.imaginarygamenews.com. The Imaginary Game News Network takes an entirely fictional and humorous view of the gaming industry. I'd love to hear from you. Thanks, Scott

It may seem like a pointless exercise to ask "what if Wii hadn't launched with Wii Sports," but sometimes the decisions that led to a particular outcome were not so clear cut at the time they were made. Things might have been quite different.

My point is actually a ...

My point is actually a pretty simple one--embrace the freedom to try new things and it will pay off in the long run. I don't advocate remaining a child, but I would encourage people not to blindly reject the value in positive things we do in our youth out of ...

How about Nintend-Owners for dogs ...

How about Nintend-Owners for dogs Dogs bark at the DSi to activate a game sequence and receive soothing pre-recorded by the owner voice commands and kudos for performing tricks. Pre-snapped images of the owners face mugging for their pet provide further encouragement. As for the Doom Cats Version, I think ...

Joshua, you're right about that. At the time of the debate, NCL's preferred choice was to go with Wii Play as the pack-in for North America. I guess the first paragraph of my post was vague on that point, so I made a quick edit to clarify it. Thanks for ...

So true, Alex. And that's a great metaphor. As I've discovered during the process, there are a great many people who look beneath the surface and share their findings. It's a real global village.

Thanks for the post, Lennart. It might be of interest for your readers to learn that when I was with Nintendo of America working on marketing Brain Age for North America we heard from NCL that much of their marketing effort in Japan was based on fear--the fear of older ...
