Andre La Barre's Blog

I create games using:

I also do unpaid volunteer work for BYOND.

  • From mid-2007 to 2011, I ran an official guild called BYOND Strategy that was dedicated to games focused on strategy mechanics.
  • From March of 2007 to December of 2010, I wrote Along The Tech Tree as a means to motivate developers to add games to the guild.
  • In mid-July of 2010, I began handling activity on BYOND's Facebook page.
  • After a 2011 redesign of the site with an emphasis on tag navigation rather than guilds, I began to widen my scope to all genres with a new column called BYOND and Within.
  • In late February of 2011, I began constructing a system to handle the feature status of games on BYOND.  This was accomplished through part of a blog/forum that I helped create called BYOND Volunteers.

I tend to go by the name ACWraith and my personal blog can be found here.

Silk Games' update for their MORPG NEStalgia is live just in time to enjoy its PC Gamer "indie hero" status. Meanwhile, my unpaid volunteer column is being automated with a tighter forum community. I can deal with that. =)

While others offered game updates, demos and interviews, I failed to properly distribute a screenshot. 100th unsolicited post FTW! (Farewell Digital Cowboys!)

BYOND and Within #24

After new releases and updates which included featured games, I learned that a project about to celebrate its fifth anniversary may instead be abandoned... However, I included a cartoon so it's all good, right?

A featured game update that isn't NEStalgia, a cooperative board game so I can pretend I'm hip and crowdsourced content competitions so I can jadedly waft a scam. Good luck to those participating in this weekend's GiaD!

I played a bit during the the first week on Steam. What really did the game in for me was the poor solution for players who quit matches during setup. The developers chose to close such matches before they can start. Most of my own ended this way due to ...

As someone who buys during the long tail, I have found sites with outdated reviews to be centers of FUD. They serve those who buy on day one at the expense of those who actually watch their wallets and do their research. That might be great for hype and drawing ...

I recently submitted a rhythm ...

I recently submitted a rhythm game with randomly generated music to a casual competition. My 1980s arcade influences made me use infinite levels, a health meter and no saves. I compromised by submitting high scores to the hub server after every song so players can quit and still make their ...

My console gaming is stuck in the last generation as well. I think there are plenty of titles I'd download and purchase if I was willing to pay a console tax, but I don't even own a television that can display 60 worth of graphics.

Comment In: The Elegance Of Continuity. [Blog - 12/17/2009 - 02:31]

I enjoyed Continuity as well. I normally shy away from platformers, but this time I stuck around to beat all of the levels. The environmental dangers were puzzles I could manipulate rather than cheap traps. Running and jumping around was then an opportunity to celebrate hypothetical solutions.
