David Wipperfurth's Blog

My primary reason for blogging on gamasutra is my interest in ludology. I'd like to share any insights or analysis I might think is of use to the greater community. While I currently have no repute in this field, anyone familiar with Logical Fallacies would agree that, that doesn't affect the validity of my analysis. --So hopefully my blogs are of use.

Comment In: Story Driven vs. Gameplay Driven Game Design [Blog - 05/27/2010 - 11:20]

There are many different kinds ...

There are many different kinds of entertainment incorporated in games: competition, chance, playing of roles, physical/chemical rush, exploration, story telling, and I'm sure others that aren't classically defined. Just as not every body likes horror movies, not everybody likes story driven games. Since different people are attracted to different forms ...

Comment In: The Hypocrisy of Flash [Blog - 05/26/2010 - 03:50]

When your alternative is going ...

When your alternative is going from the heaven-sent AS3 to bottom-of-the-grease-trap JavaScript, I doubt you are likely to switch. Intelligent people's unwavering demand for anything but javascript is what makes the cost analysis for adobe fall short of your expectations. If JavaScript wasn't to terrible, maybe adobe would have to ...

I found it interesting how ...

I found it interesting how vague the law states that position: enabling or facilitating the circumvention of effective technological measures It seems that that could be just about anything an external hdd case, a box-cutter, a shoe horn, a trash can, etc. Do you think being so vague was an ...

Comment In: Meridian 59 Developer Near Death Studios Closes [News - 01/05/2010 - 11:24]

I see Meridian 59 as ...

I see Meridian 59 as part of gaming history, and while I don't personally care much for history, I do see value in preserving it. Maybe this isn't a new idea, but changing the licensing might encourage growth/stability. Opening-up development, or allowing third-party servers, or the like. Anyways, I commend ...

Comment In: Rethinking the Trinity of MMO Design [Feature - 12/17/2009 - 04:40]

I was about to write ...

I was about to write a condensed version of what Joshua McDonald posted until I read his post. Nice work Josh, well stated. The only one other thing I was going to say was that the nicely written slow build-up of this article, whom's goal was originality, ended in a ...

I enjoyed this article thoroughly, and basically agreed with everything in it. I have a few comments that may or may not be useful. At the beginning of the article I was confused by your use of the term 'skill', because it is often used the define the players mastery ...
