I think the key is ...

I think the key is to have the player immersed into the game. Once she believed it is real, she will behave like it is real. Take The Sims as an example, all these additional contents sell because folks want their avatar to have them. Immersion is key.

I prefer STEAM over any other copy-protection any day. @Joseph if Borderlands is the last time I need to deal with Gamespy again, or Bioshock 2 is the last time I need to deal with GFW Live, then that is plain awesome. You nail it dead on right there x2

@Bob I think most games are getting blurred when it comes to genres, but having choices, action consequences and character development is pure FPS I think not.

I agree Jason and Joshua, the pretty soon all games will be social part is a bit off. For example, I don't think hardcore adventure game fans will enjoy a more social approach in searching for solutions any time soon.
