John Mawhorter's Comments

Comment In: Opinion: Dressing On The Side, Please [News - 09/12/2011 - 04:28]

A great example of visual ...

A great example of visual feedback/rewards is the little i hit something marks that appear when your attacks hit someone in the Call of Duty series. This both serves an important gameplay purpose lets you wallbang easily and shoot into smoke and just gives the player a thrill in this ...

Comment In: id's John Carmack Chooses Framerate Over Graphical Fidelity [News - 08/22/2011 - 01:48]

Also depending on the game ...

Also depending on the game engine as pointed out above with Quake 3's longer jumps for higher FPS rates your frame rate can be tied to updating game objects/events or not and therefore have even more of an effect on game feel. Since game feel is very important it certainly ...

Comment In: Understanding Balance in Video Games [Feature - 06/08/2011 - 04:00]

Literature isn't so much mature ...

Literature isn't so much mature as stagnant or dead. I would say 19th and 1900-1960 are probably the height of literature and the decline of the reading and writing letters vs. email public have made it less relevant and less celebrated as well as producing less classic or great works, ...

Comment In: Ethical Dilemmas and Dominant Moral Strategies In Games [Feature - 08/18/2011 - 04:35]

It really doesn't seem that ...

It really doesn't seem that difficult of a design direction to come up with a more complex morality system that takes into account multiple player actions and a complex set of character relationships. Implementing it would of course be difficult, but that's true of any legitimately good game design decision. ...

Comment In: Fishing, the iOS Clone market, and Patent/Copyright [Blog - 08/15/2011 - 02:15]

There really doesn't seem to ...

There really doesn't seem to be a good legal framework that solves this problem. Derivative, unoriginal, copy works exist in most other creative industries and are problems there too. Many bands will scoop other bands sound and feel and make it more accessible by dumbing it down and reap the ...

Comment In: Opinions on Game Design [Blog - 07/16/2011 - 11:09]

Sorry my formatting got ruined ...

Sorry my formatting got ruined somehow when copy pasting from word. That comment is about camera design and finding new perspectives literally from which to show action.

Comment In: Report: Inmates 'Gold Farming' In Chinese Prisons [News - 05/27/2011 - 07:27]

Funny, but I seem to ...

Funny, but I seem to recall people paying for fully levelled characters with good items as well. Maybe your argument is wrong.

Comment In: Sony: Neither Firmware Nor LA Noire Is Causing PS3s To Overheat [News - 05/20/2011 - 09:11]

They tested LA Noire with ...

They tested LA Noire with a different firmware and found no problem. They tested the new firmware with a game that wasn't LA Noire. So the problem is neither LA Noire or the new firmware, therefore this is neither Sony nor Rockstar's fault. But in combination it overheats your PS3.

Comment In: Rod Humble On Ethical Game Design And The Challenge Of Free Will [News - 04/20/2011 - 07:26]

so the laws of physics ...

so the laws of physics don't apply to the material that makes up your brain Andrew Dobbs but they do everywhere else in the universe huh

Comment In: Steve Swink On The Art Of Experimental Games [Feature - 04/08/2011 - 04:35]

Good interview. I'd like to ...

Good interview. I'd like to make the note that accessibility and depth of gameplay are opposites in many ways and that people trying to make good games should lean in the direction of depth. Not all of the indie audience is hardcore, but a lot of people dumb down their ...
