Comment In: Apple removes several iOS copycat games from one offending developer [News - 02/03/2012 - 06:52]

Bart, I am not trying ...

Bart, I am not trying to defend them but I do believe Z had an early app store Scramble game that they rebuilt as Scramble with Friends presumably with the Words WF engine . I'm not sure which was out first but it could have been either. Also, both games ...

Comment In: Interview: Seamus Blackley's new team of Atari coin-op superstars aim for iPad [News - 02/02/2012 - 09:50]

I hope these guys create ...

I hope these guys create some great new gaming experiences but I am also skeptical of their dev model. They need to know now their distribution/pricing model and need to build a game to that. They can't just decide at the last moment to tack on a F2P economy and ...

Comment In: Walmart provides coveted sales data to NPD's retail reports [News - 02/03/2012 - 12:45]

Galen, NPD is indeed struggling ...

Galen, NPD is indeed struggling to stay relevant as digital and specifically social and mobile continues to eat into the user base and sales of Retail game distribution.

Comment In: Can Marvel: Avengers Alliance bring more core gamers to Facebook? [News - 02/02/2012 - 10:41]

That is a safe assumption ...

That is a safe assumption of the rarity of action games on FB. The limitation is in the Flash tech. It is hard to do heavy, real time action with lots of interactive objects/characters and fast frame rate. I personally believe that over the next few years social game players ...

Comment In: Talking Copycats with Zynga's Design Chief [Feature - 01/31/2012 - 11:45]

It's all good competition...unless someone ...

It's all good competition...unless someone smaller borrows from Zynga and their army of lawyers and has success from that.

Comment In: Netflix drops plans to offer video game rentals [News - 01/25/2012 - 08:23]

Smart move. Games only appeal ...

Smart move. Games only appeal to a small fraction of customers and would not benefit from the same economies of scale. Plus, Retail games are continually declining and no sense investing in infrastructure to rent games when in a matter of years everything will be digitally distributed.

Comment In: A disappointing December leads to 2011 retail video game declines [News - 01/12/2012 - 04:32]

The cynical side of me ...

The cynical side of me thinks NPD downplays the trends with digital distribution including social/mobile out of self-preservation reasons. They have very accurate reporting numbers for retail but vague forecasts for digital and as retail continues to shrink they increasingly become less relevant.

Comment In: EA's free-to-play brand reaches 25M users [News - 01/12/2012 - 12:37]

Remember when Second Life boasted ...

Remember when Second Life boasted 100 Million registered users but it turns out active were lt 75K

Comment In: Did the racing genre's decline lead to the death of Black Rock and Bizzare Creations? [News - 01/12/2012 - 04:30]

Split Second was hardly in ...

Split Second was hardly in the same class as GT, NFS, Forza and GTR. I would say general competition led to their demise, where as a contraction in racing could have contributed to Bizarre's disbanding but still a massive fail by Activision in my book for closing down a profitable ...

Comment In: Freemium: Dive Right In [Blog - 01/09/2012 - 12:35]

I would agree with the ...

I would agree with the author and not just about MMOs but about all games with the opportunity for digital distribution. The reason the bulk of iOS Top Grossing apps are Freemium Games is they remove all the barriers to download i.e. not forcing the consumer to pay money before ...
