Comment In: Introduction to the Game Design Canvas [Blog - 01/18/2011 - 02:00]
I believe that the answer ... I believe that the answer to these questions is yes: a game s design and development can be mapped out, studied, and perfected in a reliable fashion. Successful companies like Nintendo, Valve, Zynga, and Blizzard would agree. Legendary game designers like Shigeru Miyamoto, Will Wright, and Peter Molyneux would likely ... |

Comment In: 5 Agile Lessons Worth Learning [Blog - 12/17/2010 - 10:14]
Other lessons learned ... Agile ... Other lessons learned ... Agile is feature driven, not resource driven. You cannot use it to measure individual team members' productivity. If you want to see hours of effort vs. output, then you should not use Agile. Agile should be all in or not at all. Some companies half-implement Agile ... |

Comment In: Stardock Suffers Layoffs After Disappointing Elemental Launch [News - 09/06/2010 - 12:31]
It seems that the title ... It seems that the title could have used some focus testing so they could fix the problems before it launched. Being a PC title, it should have been easy to do a private beta test and get some real feedback so they're not surprised by the reception when it launches. ... |

Comment In: Newell: Game-Makers Are Best Equipped To Turn Games Into Movies [News - 08/30/2010 - 08:49]
First off, we already had ... First off, we already had a movie based on the WoW IP - it's called Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. I jest, but the heart of my joke is a sad truth. Story has been second to gameplay for so long in games that at best it's derivative, at ... |

Comment In: McGonigal, EA's Bradshaw, And More Named As 'Most Influential Women in Tech' [News - 05/05/2010 - 12:32]
Now don't go spoiling our ... Now don't go spoiling our good ol' boys club .... Actually, I agree with Bradshaw. Half the population gets ignored by male-centric game developers. Women and girls do play games, and they'd play them a lot more if we developers understood what they liked. |

Comment In: Study: Game Developers Remain Happy With Industry, Despite Job Concerns [News - 05/05/2010 - 08:05]
Having a union will not ... Having a union will not keep companies from having lay-offs. The most you might expect out of a game developer union is legal representation and standards in bonus, benefits and pay structure. The solution isn't going union, it's getting better management. |

Comment In: Structure or AI Director? [Blog - 04/30/2010 - 01:00]
IMHO, the A.I. Director replaces ... IMHO, the A.I. Director replaces what would have been many inter-related spawn triggers that likely, due to the complexity, have errors that would create balance, pacing and performance problems. I know it's hard for A.I. scripters to give up this control, but the important thing for any A.I. designer is ... |

Comment In: As Court Reviews California Violent Game Law, ESA Promises To Fight [News - 04/26/2010 - 11:12]
I'm for free-speech and all, ... I'm for free-speech and all, but the ESA is making it look like we WANT to sell mature games to minors. I agree that parents should really be making these decisions, however, many video stores have policies about renting R-rated films to minors, so why should a similar but formalized ... |

Comment In: Havok Director David O'Meara Leaves Company [News - 04/13/2010 - 06:29]

Thank you, David. Havok was ... Thank you, David. Havok was instrumental in Fracture's physics game mechanics. It made gameplay objects like the Tesla, Spike Grenade, Prismatic Gates and Manapults a blast to implement. |

Comment In: Why Trial and Error will Doom Games [Blog - 04/12/2010 - 04:48]
@Adam Biship - Yeah, what ... @Adam Biship - Yeah, what Prash Nelson-Smythe said, but to add to that ... The trial error happens when you can't figure out how to continue. I guess it's a question of how you want to be frustrated. @Prash This blog post seems to be much more about ensuring that ... |
