Comment In: HBO considers fictional game development drama series [News - 01/23/2012 - 09:26]

If it's based on the ... If it's based on the documentary, perhaps not. And if it is a misconception, take heart: usually TV makes its characters look as glamorous as possible. For example, I'm pretty sure it wasn't actually as interesting working in an ad agency in the 60's as everyone seems to believe. |

This is awesome. I used ... This is awesome. I used that mouse pad too right up until a few months ago. I had used it so much that the rubber under the front edge has all worn off and it was falling apart into a sticky mess. It's amazing how many people used and remember ... |

Comment In: Six words about stories in games [Blog - 01/14/2012 - 05:29]

Mechanics make stories, not you. ... Mechanics make stories, not you. Make my mind-pictures real. Punish me again. Oh, yes. All right, I've been playing too much Dark Souls . |

Comment In: Game descriptions, rules, and mechanics: what are the differences and similarities? [Blog - 01/09/2012 - 08:35]

I think rules and rulebooks ... I think rules and rulebooks are distinct in the same way as an idea and a book explaining that idea. One is an abstract relationship in a system, like a math equation. The other is a specific representation of that relationship, like a single written instance of that equation on ... |

Comment In: Steam sales grow, despite influx of competition [News - 01/06/2012 - 12:26]

The only reason why I ... The only reason why I think this might not happen with Valve is that Gabe seems to have spread that philosophy beyond himself. Valve isn't Newell - it's all of them. Possibly just wishful thinking, but I'm really hoping that Valve is still Valve in 20 years. |

Comment In: What is Depth in Games? [Blog - 12/19/2011 - 10:18]
|
@Ara - I like your ... @Ara - I like your decision input list. To me that's closer to a definition of depth than the number of possible outputs. Not quite there, but it's a more useful understanding for game designers. If you're just trying to make more viable strategies you end up with a reskinned ... |

Comment In: Opinion: Why On Earth Would We Write Our Own Game Engine? [News - 12/19/2011 - 03:33]
|
The era of one-engine-per-game is ... The era of one-engine-per-game is slowly ending. It started when they began licensing the DOOM engine maybe earlier . It's continued, since then - fewer and fewer engines are needed, more and more games re-use. As technology goes forward, engines get better and more generalized, so the value proposition in ... |

Great news. It's a very ... Great news. It's a very well-crafted game. Now I'm just wondering why this story is accompanied by a screenshot from CoD4, snicker Edit: CoD4 screenshot is gone Oh well, I had a warm moment of nostalgia there. |

Comment In: Strategic Thinking Is Becoming Rare Among Game Players [Blog - 12/06/2011 - 08:54]
|
Is there any evidence that ... Is there any evidence that there are fewer players willing to engage in long, slow, deep-thinking strategic games today Or, as Mr. Carroll mentioned above, could it be that this core set of players has now simply been joined by other groups who are interested in more casual games Are ... |
