GamaGeek Summary:
This geek’s headshot shows what happens when you combine long hours of coding with buttermilk and Indonesian food.
Credits:
Above all, CoreLife, my übergeek freeware project featuring real-time evolving virus code; then there's Virtual Fire, a small graphics toy, which got picked up by SoftDisk Publishing - nothing spectacular, but I mainly abuse that fact to brag about sharing my "early Softdisk roots" with the real luminaries from id and Epic :-)
Current Project:
Project: Working on technology for Unreal and Unreal Tournament – mainly graphics- and under-the-hood programming stuff.
Why I Got Into the Industry:
In the early ‘90s I was slowly dropping out of college while having big dreams of becoming a PC shareware author. I even bought Steven Hudgik's Writing and Marketing Shareware and a shareware marketing manual from J.W. Olsen, plus TONS of blank 5-1/4" floppies (which are still gathering dust in the attic of my parents' house....). I got my foot in the door with Epic Games by e-mailing with Tim Sweeney on Compuserve, waaaaay back in January 1995. They were just starting development of Unreal and liked the 2D fire effects demo I sent them. I ended up joining the team in the summer of 1997 in Canada for a couple of weeks of "Unreal Crunch Time," which turned into nine cold but very educational months - where I also made some really cool friends, some of whom are still part of the Unreal team today.
Favorite Type of Game:
Puzzle games.
Favorite Current Game:
Rummikub, against the PC. So bite me.
Favorite Game of all Time:
Galactic Empire !! An ancient turn-based strategy game on our C64 in BASIC, where you conquer each other's star systems by sending out fleet.
Favorite Geek Food:
Indonesian/Chinese
Favorite Geek Beverage:
Buttermilk, soy milk
Favorite Non-Geek Activities:
Listening to the master's music--Stevie Wonder. Running, biking, browsing libraries and bookstores (oh no, those are geek activities...)
Pet Peeve:
Ignorance. Especially my own.
Why I Joined Gamasutra:
It's a great companion site for additional cool articles, and source code for the programming features in Game Developer magazine.
Favorite GamaSection:
The programming articles, of course.
Favorite GamaArticle:
Optimizing Games for the Pentium III Processor. Assembly optimization is my first love, while I love the power of higher level C++ coding I'll probably always be crafting inner loops in assembly, if only for fun.
Favorite GamaThread:
The Industry Threads -> Programming Section
Favorite Geeky Dream:
They all feature me getting in predicaments which I solve simply by using my ability to fly. The people in my dreams are always amazed at that, which baffles me - you'd think they'd be used to it by now.

"Where would we be without the agitators of the world attaching the electrodes of knowledge to the nipples of ignorance?" - Dick Solomon, "3rd Rock from the Sun"
