GamaGeek Summary:
This geek shows off his weapons in his war against data bloat.
Credits:
Saturn programmer on Grand Theft Auto (until it was unceremoniously dropped), PC programmer on Grand Theft Auto, then Playstation Library programmer on Frenzy for SCi and Porting PC blaster XS to the Playstation (again dropped, I don't have much luck with projects).
Current Project:
Developing the Playstation version of Urban Chaos, and fighting PC code and data bloat at every turn.
Why I Got Into the Industry:
Lots and lots and lots of hard work, and just a modicum of talent. Actually I started on the ZX81, and grew from there. In 1989 I got an Archimedes and joined the Demo scene. From there I wrote my first published game, Castle Blackheart, a Gauntlet-style game, and I haven't looked back.
Favorite Type of Game:
Adventures, driving games and FPSs
Favorite Current Game:
Driver and Quake 3 Test
Favorite Game of all Time:
Final Fantasy VII
Favorite Geek Food:
Burger King Bacon Double Cheeseburger
Favorite Geek Beverage:
Tea (lots and lots and lots of tea)
Favorite Non-Geek Activities:
As a true geek, I often find I don't have much time for non-geek activities--the odd night out down the pub is as far as it ever gets.
Pet Peeve:
Ace game player level designers who make even the first level too difficult, then refuse to make it easier because, "Well I can finish it."
Why I Joined Gamasutra:
It's about games and the games industry, it's informative and funny, and best of all it's free.
Favorite GamaSection:
Yankee Digest
Favorite GamaArticle:
Postmortem: DreamWorks Interactive's Trespasser, mainly because it sounded so much like how our game has been going, all those grand ideas, all those wonderful grandiose concepts, and no design whatsoever. It all sounded so familiar, no wonder it failed.
Favorite GamaThread:
Artists vs. Programmers. Always a hotly debated issue at every company I've worked at. I've always treated artists with respect and tried whenever possible to explain when I've placed restrictions on them exactly why I am doing it. A little communication can make a lot of difference.
Favorite Geeky Dream:
I never seem to remember any dream for more than a few seconds once I awaken, what I do remember is that they are all seem very real, and at the same time totally surreal.
