Michael Sempert's music is equal parts heart and craft. Sempert graduated from the double-degree program at Tufts and New England Conservatory of Music ('04) in his home town of Boston, MA. with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition. He has composed music for film and TV, including original score for indie films Jaywalking (2017) Homestate (2016) and Hey (2015). His original songs have been licensed for TV by major networks including CBS, NBC, ABC and Netflix. In 2015, Sempert co-founded West Channel, a commercial music house whose clients include Facebook, Cabela's, VISA and Dunkin' Donuts as well as the non-profits Change Heroes and the UN Foundation. As an artist and a songwriter, he's created an expansive body of work, spanning folk and Americana to synth-pop, as well as electronic, orchestral and chamber music.
While living in the Bay Area of California, Sempert was lauded as one of the Bay Area's finest songwriters. As the leader of Birds & Batteries, he wrote, produced and mixed five critically acclaimed albums for the band. Pitchfork described their 2009 EP Up To No Good as "a high-concept mashup of two of the slickest eras of pop production." Sempert released his first solo album, Mid Dream in May, 2014 (Velvet Blue Music) which led to usage of the song Finest Line in the viral video "Solar Freakin' Roadways" which accrued over 22 million views on YouTube. Sempert has performed his original songs in concert halls, bars and living rooms all over the United States, as well as on stage at the first annual [email protected] event held at the San Francisco Jazz Center. In 2015, Sempert released an album of instrumental electronic music under the moniker of Volcanic Legacy, with companion video-remixes of Planet Earth. His second solo album under his own name, Tend the Flame was released in November, 2017 and features the single Distance.
Sempert has created remixes for some of the most original artists in indie-rock, including ARMS, Toro y Moi, Oh No Ono, Still Flyin' and Peter Wolf Crier (Jagjaguar). Michael has composed several commissioned works of new music for the Areon Flute chamber music ensemble, featured on their albums Gossip Cats Are Dancing and Thrive. Sempert has also contributed string and horn arrangements to albums by some of the most visceral and artful singer-songwriters around, including Sonya Cotton, Jay Henderson and Kacey Johansing.
