On DICE 2006's second afternoon, 'The Battle Of Bunker Hill', was trailed as a mysterious showdown between two game design giants, but turned out to be a gigantic woodgrain TV, a couple of old couches, a game of Pong, and a handful of industry legends playing a rather amusing game show. [02/13/06]
Gamasutra sits down with GameTap's vice president of content at DICE to get the details on how Turner Broadcasting's broadband entertainment network, which pioneers a monthly $14.95 subscription for ‘all you can eat' classic games for your PC, is faring so far in the marketplace and how the whole idea of GameTap came about in the first place. The latest in-depth DICE write-up deals with David Jaffe's speech, “Chasing Perfection: The Making of God of War", which would go on to win seven awards at the Interactive Achievement Awards later that night. God of War was a rare opportunity for a game designer, in that Jaffe was given nearly complete creative control to create a game of his own design, on his terms, with a substantial budget, and he discusses that, as well as the role of IP in games, in his fascinating talk. In his keynote on the second day of the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Microsoft's Peter Moore, the corporate vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Division, was tasked with talking about Microsoft's renewed attention to the PC market in his speech 'The Changing World Of PC Games', something most recently exemplified by the announcement that Halo 2 is coming exclusively to Windows Vista, but also discussed some intriguing Xbox 360-related content. Today's second in-depth DICE feature talks about the previously mentioned DICE keynote by Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime, in which the Nintendo of America executive vice president of sales and marketing announced a number of new Nintendo DS-related measures, including DS-specific wireless kiosks and new voice chat game options. However, Fils-Aime also went into a great deal of detail regarding Nintendo's philosophical position on market expansion and the future of games, and Gamasutra has perhaps the most in-depth write-up of his full remarks. Today's first in-depth DICE feature deals with the joint address by current NCSoft senior executives and former Origin co-founders Richard and Robert Garriott to the attendees of the 2006 DICE Summit in Las Vegas. According to writer N. Evan Van Zelfden, the lecture began with a short parody film, which set the stage for both the struggle of light and dark which the brothers engage in. It also continued with some fascinating material on the history of the Garriotts. [02/09/06]
