[Artist Profile]

Artist Summary:
Joel Boucquemont is a french-educated digital artist and painter currently living in San Francisco. Past work includes game art for Papyrus, EA, Psygnosis, and now Akita Software.

Current Project:
Creating and supervising the visual aspects of Last of The Fallen at Akita Software.
Credits:
Indycar II - Papyrus
Nascar Racing 2 - Papyrus
Road Rash 3D - Electronic Arts.
Bio:

After getting a masters degree of fine arts/illustration (using the computer as a primary tool) at Ecole Emile Cohl in Lyon, France, I decided to get a whiff of the bigger world. My first move was to Budapest, where I ended up designing and painting a calendar (solo) which was published in 1993. In 1994, I moved to New Hampshire and sharpened my skills working as a gardener and a bakery clown until Papyrus (a Boston-based racing car simulation developer) opened the gates of the game industry for me.

Exit bread, enter pizza!

Indycar II and Nascar 2 required a lot of pizzas. After two years at Papyrus, I decided to change my diet. My wife and I bought a van, jumped in it, and took some time travelling across this immense country of yours. Purpose: to land in San Francisco, which is my current city of residence.

Since then I have worked for EA, at Psygnosis, and with Akita Software in the bay area. The last two years have been particularly juicy in terms of creativity and having great environments in which to evolve.

Painting is pretty much the only thing I can do and want to do on a regular basis, besides having a good fondue with a bunch of friends, of course.

As a general rule, I am open to any project where creativity and good spirit are at the top of the agenda.
Inspiration:
Tough one! Mental orgasm I would say. I guess I'll just give a few names of some of the artists who left a permanent impression on me: Rembrandt, Terry Gilliam, Dave Mc Kean, Tim Burton and some French comic book masters like Enki Bilal, Nicolas de Crecy, Moebius, Franquin, and Reiser.
Favorite Game Art:
Bad Mojo, MDK, Abe's Odyssey, Zork(s), Grim Fandango.
Why I Got into the Industry:
To embark on a potentially great adventure. I thrive on the creation of alternate realities using the experimentation possibilities offered by computer graphics tools.
Tools I Can't Live Without:
Photoshop and Studio Paint come to mind, but then again that's what I used to say about Deluxe paint.
Music I Listen to While Working:
Pretty much everything save Philippe Glass or the Spice Girls. The range goes from Tom Waits to Prokofiev. A short list would include: Louis Sclavis Quintet, Michel Portal, Kronos Quartet, Nina Hagen, Dr John, and a local talent named Mark Growden.
