| Bio:
|
|
I started working
as a traditional cell animator back in 1992. My first steps
in the computer game industry were animated cut scenes and
animated 2D sprites for early arcade games (Zelda: The
Wand of Gamelon, Body Slam by Philips CDI). Those
days I was also drawing a lot of caricatures and animated
short character animations in Autodesk Animator just for fun.
Shortly after joining
a group of artists at Creat Studio in St. Petersburg in 1995,
I began to delve into the magic of Softimage, and character
animation in particular. The Studio did a lot of commercials
work, but also started working with game developers and publishers
in the US and Europe doing intro movies and cut scenes. Character
animation eventually became the strategic direction of the
studio activity, and I ended up becoming the Lead Animator
for our projects.

| Inspiration:
|
| I
derive a lot of happiness from seeing the results of my work
and especially from the successful work of my genius colleagues
at the studio ;-). So I want to do more and more exciting work.
I have to say that the projects are becoming more and more challenging
and interesting, too. Lip synch and cloth animation are now
a requirement most of the time. |
| Favorite
Game Art: |
| Frankly,
I’m not a big expert in computer gaming and not really familiar
with wide range of games. My favorite ones are those that we
play on the network after work: Quake, StarCraft, HalfLife.
But I’d point to one of our own games, Millennium Racer,
as some of my favorite game art. It has a definite cyberpunk/William
Gibson aesthetic to it. |
| Why
I Got into the Industry: |
| I
find that it is hard to find a full application for my skills
and artistic ambitions outside of games -- especially with TV
and film animation production down in Russia. Games work allows
smaller teams and more artistic freedom and more control over
projects. Games work is more interesting and alive, so to speak. |
| Tools
I Can't Live Without: |
| Softimage,
because I have not seen anything better for character animation.
Over the last few years it has become something of an extra
limb for me. Only some killer new application that I haven't
seen yet will in my view challenge the convenience and features
of this program. To me, Softimage is synonymous with character
animation. |
| Music
I Listen to While Working: |
| When
I work I prefer complete silence (or the soundtrack that I'm
working with) because my mind is too occupied with my work.
The rest of the time I like any kind of music, except really
hardcore. |
