Conclusion

Regretfully, this paper casts the developer/publisher relationship as an adversarial one. In one sense, it is. The developer wants to be paid as soon as possible to cover his risks, and the publisher wishes to delay his payments to minimize his own. However, the best way to both prevent and resolve problems is by fostering communication and trust - not just between the project manager and the producer, but also between the developer's and producer's management. With open communication, followed by professional business practices and work that satisfies everyone's needs - not just what the contract requires - maybe that contract can stay locked up in the drawer a little more often.
