Conclusion

The audio subsystem of PCs is going through a transformation. Recent innovations in OS support – APIs such as DirectSound, DirectSound3D, and DirectMusic – and comparable innovations in hardware support – MMX, PCI, and AC97 – will account for much improved audio in 1998. And sound quality is going to get even better looking farther ahead as faster processors permit more sophisticated music synthesis and USB and 1394 make it possible to preserve the audio quality inherent in the digital representation. Better technology will encourage developers to do even more with sound, so you ain’t heard nothing yet!

 Dr. Jeffrey Barish is founder and president of EuPhonics, a software firm specializing in digital audio and digital music synthesis products. He is also a professor of electrical engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Barish has a Ph.D. and M.S. in EE from Stanford, and a BSEE from MIT. Prior to establishing EuPhonics, Dr. Barish was founder and vice president of engineering for Sonic Solutions. He also worked at Lucasfilm/The Droid Works, where he was hardware manager of the team developing SoundDroid, a programmable system for processing digital audio.
