URU soundtrack sampler
This was taken from pieces in the game URU, as well as containing music that is yet to be released for future content. It contains live players as well as plenty of samples. These are from works composed over the last three years. [MP3]

RealMyst Trailer score
This is still one of my favorites composed about three years ago. I love the way it turned out with picture. I did this one before I augmented my setup to include GigaStudio, so it was almost entirely composed using JV-1080's and a K2000. [MP3]

Olive Garden
This is a jazz piece I wrote from my Ave Jazz (WEA) release several years back. That's when I was playing flugelhorn a bit more. This was all recorded and mixed in my analog home studio at the time that consisted of a 1" 16 track tape machine and a great Trident series 65 console that I still have waiting to be set up again in my new studio. I can't imagine working with only 16 tracks anymore. [MP3]

No Fear
Another piece from the album. A bit more aggressive. This was my first venture into hip-hop. It was co-produced by Al Eaton of "Too Short" fame. This led into quite a bit of writing and session work doing hip-hop and "New Jack Swing" in the 90's including session work for an Ice-T album doing solo trumpet. [MP3]

Feast Of the Maker/First Link
This is a snippet of something a bit more orchestral in nature written for the Myst fans a few years back.

Current Projects:

Currently, I am continuing my work on the music and sound for URU expansions. The URU soundtrack has recently been released. The expansions will require constant new content, as well as new soundtracks. Also, I am in the beginning stages of the next Robota trailer for Doug Chiang, and as always, I am looking for other projects to keep my perspective fresh.

Bio:

Tim Larkin has been playing trumpet and piano in various situations since he was very young, from local bay area symphonies to Big Bands, pit orchestras and recording sessions. One of the best memories he has of that time was playing with James Brown one night, who came up to him with a mic in his hand, smiled and said "play". He soloed for the next several minutes while Brown held the mic up to the bell, and the band grooved like no other. Tim says it's "something you just can't put into words for someone who hasn't been in a similar situation". He also toured with SF Opera as well as many rock and dance bands, allowing him to see places and experience things he otherwise would never have had the opportunity to do otherwise.

Tim started in the game industry about ten years ago working as a composer/sound designer for Broderbund. He created sound design for Riven while working there and was later hired at Cyan to work on URU which recently won PC Gamer Magazine's 2003 Best Sound Award and GameSpot's 2003 Best Sound Award. Tim still performs session work regularly as a trumpet player as well as doing freelance sound design and composition outside Cyan. He was the sound designer on the Academy award winning animated short film, "The ChubbChubbs" from Sony Imageworks, and have played on numerous films and documentaries.

Why I Got into the Industry:

It was a fluke really... I had no intention at the time to get into game audio as a career. I was branching out from my playing and writing at the time, and stumbled across Broderbund. One thing led to another and the rest is history. It also happened to be a great time to get into the industry because it was growing rapidly.

Tools I Can't Live Without:

Digital Performer, Waves, Pro Tools and GigaStudio. If it's MIDI, it's DP, if it's audio, it PT, and if it sampled, it's Giga or Kontakt. Sample libraries and soft synths I'm fond of include Sonic Implants Strings, Silk Road, World Winds, Atmosphere, and Dancing Drums.

Favorite Game Audio:
I enjoyed the music from Grim Fandango about the best out of anything that I've played. It set a great mood and was extremely well composed and produced.
Inspiration:
I get my inspiration from visuals. I'm rarely at a loss for ideas when I see something that moves me. I also like to listen to soundtracks that have something different about them. The soundtrack for American Beauty was one of those, as was Road To Perdition, and even Harry Potter.
Favorite Music:
I listen to soundtracks whenever my family's not listening to something. I love Thomas Newman scores and listening to Gino Vanelli with my daughter.
Favorite Movie:
Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray.
