Bio:

Robin Chyo is a concept designer/illustrator who resides in the Bay Area, California. His artwork is heavily influenced by video games and movies. Robin's imagination knows no limits, and he is determined to become a highlight in the arts and gaming community.

Inspiration:

Aside from films and games, I'm inspired by what I see everyday. Whenever I
go outside, there's always something new and something different happening that I hadn't noticed before. I try to take the subtle observations and try to create something out of it.

Why I Want to Get into the Industry:

I want to get into the gaming industry because I want to be able to inspire people to take advantage of their imaginations and to be more creative. I know that's what cartoons and games have done for me.

Favorite Game Audio/Art:

My favorite game art is Yoji Shinkawa's work in the Metal Gear Solid series. He's really done an amazing job with creating interesting-looking characters and the cool part is that most of them are designed off of real-world outfits (bomb suits, military garb, and so on). But his technical work stands out the most. His Cyborg Ninja still stands out as one of the best designed characters in the world of gaming (in my opinion at least).

Tools I Can't Live Without:

I can't live without my sketchbook (and a pencil and eraser, of course), my computer, my Epson 1280 printer, my scanner, and my tablet. I might need a drafting table, too. And maybe some pens and brushes. Oil paints and acrylic paints are a must. I'll probably need some water and turpentine. Ah, screw it. I can't live without any of my art tools.

Music I Listen to While Working:

I like to listen to video game soundtracks, movie soundtracks, and some good old contemporary rock.

Favorite Book:

My favorite book is probably Mathilda, by Roald Dahl. Actually, any Roald Dahl book is a treat. John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men is also another favorite.

Favorite Movie :

My favorite movie is The Professional (Leon) with Jean Reno and Natalie Portman. A brilliant combination of action and drama.

Current Project:

I am currently working alongside a group of talented illustrators to release our second book from the Matchstick Monsters brand. I'm also working on some conceptual designs for a film project and doing a poster for an upcoming animated film festival. I'm trying to squeeze in some more sketchbook time and working on my character designs and coloring techniques.
