Analysis: The Season's 'Recession-Proof' Games, Bad Timing For  Left 4 Dead 2 ?

[In the latest tracking study provided to Gamasutra by OTX's GamePlan Insights, analyst Nick Williams examines the games that look poised to resist the recession's impact on the consumer, from Modern Warfare 2 to New Super Mario Bros. and more -- plus the role loyalty plays in sequel purchases.]

Looking ahead to the remainder of 2009, there are four primary console releases that are primed to battle with already released titles for holiday market share. At the top of OTX's GamePlan Insights October tracking charts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 retains its expected position as the most anticipated upcoming title.

But Assassin's Creed 2, New Super Mario Bros, and Left 4 Dead 2 are also recording strong metrics across the board.

One of these measures featured in the tracking charts is the "Recession-Proof Index", a brand new measure designed to show the resiliency of titles against heavy competition and declines in consumer spending.

This index specifically looks at titles that are most frequently chosen as the first, second, or third purchase choice. As demonstrated by this month's charts, titles that perform well in this measure are ones that are "genre leaders" or own a specific corner of the market.

OTX's GamePlan tracking survey involves polling 1,000 U.S. gamers each week, and the charts that begin this month's analysis list October's top already-released games from a purchase intent perspective:



Next, we look forward to examine purchase intent for not yet released games. As might be expected, Modern Warfare 2 and New Super Mario Bros. are the most recession-proof November releases, but Assassin's Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 are also surging to the top of gamers' wishlists:



With such a strong slate of mid-November releases, measures such as Awareness and Purchase Intent only show one side of the story. In order to provide context to these performance measures, it is important to understand who is showing interest in the titles.

In addition to audience demographics and competitive affinities, the data can also offer insight into franchise lineage. This chart, provided exclusively to Gamasutra, cross-tabs intended purchasers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2, with ownership for their previous franchise counterparts:



This data offers a unique look into the composition of the target audience for each title. For example, Assassin's Creed appears to have the strongest franchise lineage, with 61 percent of intenders for the 360 sequel claiming to own the original. In other words, purchase intent is being driven by a majority of gamers who already own the first title.

On the other side of the spectrum, 46 percent of those who plan to buy Left 4 Dead 2 own last year's original Left 4 Dead. That is not to say that the Left 4 Dead audience is disloyal (90 percent of owners plan to buy the sequel), it is just that interest in sequel has expanded well beyond the original base.

This franchise lineage data suggests that the positive buzz for the Left 4 Dead franchise has quickly propelled it into the big leagues of console gaming. The upside to this rapid growth is the sequel is being mentioned in the same breath as titles such as Halo 3: ODST, Modern Warfare 2, and Assassin's Creed 2.

The downside to the rapid growth is that the title is launching around the same time as these heavy hitters, and finds itself trailing these titles across almost every metric.

Most importantly, Left 4 Dead 2 ranks behind its competitors in the "Recession-Proof Index," which indicates that if Xbox 360 gamers only purchase two or three titles this holiday, Left 4 Dead 2 could be the one most frequently dropped from the Wishlist.

In OTX's view, Left 4 Dead 2 would have been better suited as a January or February 2010 release, where it could have benefited from separation from the holiday titans and competed against titles with lower competitive affinities.

I ain't buying the indicators which say that Left 4 Dead 2 is in trouble. That game has a phenomal following. Since 90 % of those who own Left 4 Dead plan on buying the sequel, I don't think that the conclusion:

It makes no sense whatsoever to make this claim. Simply one of those times that the statistical analysis fails to take account for reality.

L4D sold phenomally well, I think 2.5 million for the 360 exclusive. If 90 % say they will buy it. Sounds like Valve has a 2.3 million dollar seller.

So, do you really think it will be off the wish list?

Yea I ain't buying the argument either. Isn't that a pretty big jump for L4D2 on the upcoming titles list in the last couple of months? Pretty sure it was in the teens not that long ago. Anyhow, with Valve/MS marketing this as true blue 360 exclusive and throwing $25 million in marketing at it I see no way this could fall this holiday season. Not to mention last year when everyone was saying Left4Dead didn't have chance when it was sandwiched in between Gears 2 and WaW. It performed terrific even between those established brand names. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how it fares this holiday and beyond, but my money is in the long run the title will outperform the first. Maybe not right of the gate, but in the end no question. The effect that AC could have it on it since it is day and date would be the biggest concern here I believe. Modern Warfare 2 will be huge, but as we saw last year it can perform against big name shooters.

I'd place a save Vegas bet that the people drawing up these numbers would not be able to tell the difference between Asassin's Creed II and CoD:MW2 if both games were on two seperate screens right in fron of them.

Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver has pretty low "purchase intent" and "recession-proof index" values. Seems wrong to me. Those two games have sold, in the middle of the Japanese recession, over 2 million copies.

Dragon Age: Origins isn't on the list, and as far as I can tell, it's hugely anticipated.

Borderlands is the number one game on Steam this week, the boxed version was sold out at my local Best Buy and Target stores, and it's not on the "released" list.

This is a strange survey to me. Something may be wrong with the indexing formulas...?

Yeah I will buy L4D2 and the new Super Mario but my wii since I had has no problems unlike my 360 they need to get the Red Ring of Death fix because I will break down buy another one when I get Tax break.

@steve and jay – appreciate the feedback. I did not mean to imply that L4D2 is going to be a dud this holiday season. The data simply shows that there is a huge market potential for this game beyond the original owners. If the title had a bit more separation between AC2 and MW2 and even ODST, there would be a better chance of it converting these new gamers and making significant gains over last year.

@carl chavez -- if you combine the purchase intent for HeartGold and SoulSilver, it would be ranked number 5 on the upcoming charts. That is pretty solid seeing that it is not scheduled to launch in the US until the middle of next year. Dragon Age still hasn't penetrated beyond the core 360 gamer which is why it hasn't cracked the top 25. As for Borderlands, it has made huge strides in Awareness and Purchase Intent during the last couple of weeks, and is just outside the top 25 on the released list.

It has also been argued on Gametrailers Bonus Round that L4D2 is following up to the first installment less than 12 months after its first release. Whereas Modern Warfare was released over two years ago and there needs to be a period between sequels to generate a renewed desire for a certain game's appeal.

L4D as a franchise is brilliant and many developers now see co-op centric game designs as a possibility, that said we are also seeing game prices increase by $10 at retail and many titles taking the apparent spotlight.

If L4D2 requires we have good, tactical friends to fully enjoy does the franchise suffer from the possibility that many gamers might believe it will hard to recruit people for co-op matches when everyone is playing the other "big christmas releases"? Will this perception hurt L4D2 sales?

Dont forget L4D (and Valve) has a large PC following. This only seems to refer to 360 sales. The latest L4D has probably the largest marketing/media investment for a Valve game to date. Ive got to believe this is for the console crowd, not for the PC market, which has a very strong WOM component.

I've pre-purchased L4D2 on PC only this time around, where as I had it on both 360 and PC in the last round. For me it's not that hard to believe that L4D2 may be in a bit of trouble on the console side. Many people see nothing new in it after only having bought L4D 1 a few months ago (in their minds).

I know a lot of people who thought that the original was simply too short and have no intention of and I quote "Making that mistake again".

I don't think the sales of the sequel will be too shabby but, I do think they will be below what everyone is expecting.
