Analysis: Madden NFL 10 First-Month Sales Fall 18 Percent Over '08
Advertisement
[As part of our exclusive monthly look at August's NPD numbers, Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews looks at this year's decline in the industry-bellwether Madden NFL franchise, its performance on different platforms, and what the results mean in a down economy.]

Each August Electronic Arts and its EA Sports division release another update to its dominant American football franchise, Madden NFL. While the industry is in the grip of a downturn, it's natural to look at standards like Madden to measure which way the wind is blowing.

As indicated in an internal EA memo, sales of Madden NFL 10 are down this year compared to last year's Madden NFL 09. In particular, Madden NFL 09 moved 2.3 million units in August 2008 while only 1.9 million units of Madden NFL 10 were sold in the same period this year. That's a drop of about 18 percent.

It's helpful to break down how Madden sales differed from 2008 to 2009. First, practically every system saw a drop in unit sales for the first month.

Unit sales of the Xbox 360 version dropped only 7 percent, while the Wii version fell by 42 percent, and the PlayStation 2 version by 62 percent. Sales of the PSP version were down, while EA declined to publish a Nintendo DS version at all this year.

Against this set of declines the PlayStation 3 version grew a very modest 3 percent.

For the platform manufacturers the news was mixed. Unit sales for the Xbox 360 version were down, but Microsoft's first-month share of Madden NFL 10 sales has now exceeded that of its key rival, Sony.

While the PS3 posted the only sales growth among the various platforms, sales on its PlayStation 2 collapsed and those owners did not appear to be upgrading en masse to the newer Sony platform.

As for Nintendo, Madden enthusiasm appears to have collapsed on its Wii, although history has shown that the Wii version may sell in higher volume through the remainder of the year than will other versions.

The key question here is whether Madden NFL 10 suffered inordinately weak sales this year compared to its potential in a down industry. While there may be some franchise fatigue – Madden NFL 10 is now over two decades old – the 18 percent drop in first-month sales doesn't seem out of line to us, especially after several months of weaker software unit sales.

Moreover, we think it is particularly important that sales of the PlayStation 2 version have collapsed so utterly and yet there has been no corresponding surge on other platforms. That suggests to us the possibility that former PlayStation 2 owners are still waiting for an opportunity to upgrade and are holding off on buying Madden until acquiring that new platform.

The price war between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 could have a profound effect on Madden NFL 10 sales through the rest of the year. As late adopters pick up their new system, so too may EA see sales of their football franchise rebound later this year.

the truth is the economy has nothing really to do with the downturn in software sales but has everything to do with the fact that the $60 honeymoon is over. Essentially gamers are saying they no longer want to pay $60 for game anymore.

Not neccessarily.
History has shown that the 360 version usually outsells the wii version after August as well.
Madden NPD sales rankings after August.

2007:
360 version:
September # 6
December # 19

Wii version:
Never ranked in the top 20 after August

2008:
360 version:
September # 8
November # 20
December # 18

Wii version:
Never ranked in the top 20 again after August.

The 360 version not only sells more in August it tends to have longer legs, and sell more after August as well.

A good bit of Wii Madden's sales can come after a weak first-month showing. Link is in the full feature.

Are people finally waking up to the fact there's no big difference from madden 09 to madden 10? I hope EA sales get WORSE with regard to Madden and I hope people send a message. I got Madden 10 for $30 opening day. There's no way I would have bought it for $60.

Now that digital delivery is becoming more and more prevalent, EA is running out of excuses for the $60 yearly update. Perhaps Madden 11 should come in the form of a reskin and a roster update, maybe a new feature-- for free or at a much lower cost.

It's time to extend the lifespan for these sports games that have hit the ceiling for gameplay growth. If Fight Night can sit out for a few years, I don't see why NBA or NHL can't do the same.

Everything was on the right track a few years ago when the 2K and EA were competing, offering games for $30. That seemed reasonable.

Pretty much agree with most of the posters above. I think there these small annual improvements in gameplay has led to franchise fatigue with Madden.
Madden 10 itself had very high scores at Metacritic, and the marketing was great, but then is there really that much of a differenc between Madden 9 and Madden 10 for someone to plunk down $60 for Madden 10?

Funny thing though is, in Europe EA FIFA saes just keep shooting up to new sales records every year, even though its also an annual franchise just like Madden.

Maybe it's cause Madden's an Old Fart that isn't on TV anymore??

The real problem is that EA is spending their money on the wrong system. those Ps2 owners have migrated to Wii. And when I tell people "last night I was plying Madden on the Wii" the response is always, "you can play Madden on Wii?". The 360/ps3 crowds already know about Madden. How 'bout educating the ignorant masses, EA?

EA stopped developing for the PC, and that hurt their sales numbers. For the game systems, the price is simply too much. Basically, you're paying $60 for nothing more than getting roster updates as the differences between 10 and 9 are negligible. Of course, before that the differences between 2004 and 2008 were also neglibile. When they produced games for the PC I would buy the game each year, but not for the XBOX or the Wii. It's just not worth it. Any more, a game has to be outstanding in order for me to shell out more than $40 for it, which means my purchases for the XBOX and the Wii have drastically fallen as most games are more hype than quality. When games are released on the PC, XBOX and Wii I usually opt for the PC version due to less cost and higher quality graphics. For instance, 2K Sports put out their latest MLB game on the PC platform and the game systems. Out of curiousity I purchased the PC version, and rented the XBOX version. The PC version was $40 cheaper, and actually looked much better since my video cards are not limited to 720. The gameplay was the same in both, so given that why spend the extra money?
