Virtual Motion's Motion Simulation Hardware Virtual Motion has a product in development that targets developers and players of 3D games. Instead of relying on optical illusions, and moving the screen image to give you the visual impression of movement, Virtual Motion's Motionware system uses a scaled-down version of widely-used medical technology to create the sensation of actual movement by stimulating the neurological system. MotionWare uses galvanic stimulation of the vestibular system--that is, electronic stimulation that influences the user's sense of balance. This technology has been used safely for years in various medical fields, and Virtual Motion proposes coordinating the technology with a visual scene within a virtual reality environment. Virtual Motion says vestibular stimulation provides the movement and acceleration cues people need to enhance their experience of virtual reality without the use of bulky and expensive mechanical devices. It can be integrated into any game's source code to add another depth to the immersion of a game environment. While MotionWare is still in testing and prototyping, Virtual Motion expects to be able to produce this product sometime around the middle of 2001 with a price range around $100. Motion
