| 01.05.2007PS3 vs Wii quibbles... Well, call me a pedant, but I had to take issue with a couple of Ernest's points in his recent article...
Firstly, it is wrong to suggest that Nintendo were in third place in the era of Playstation, N64 and Saturn. The best figures I could find suggest Saturn sold somewhere in the region of 9 million units while the N64 sold well over 30 million...
Secondly, the battle between second and third in the era of PS2, Xbox and Gamecube was a lot closer than the battle between first and second. While the PS2 rattled up over 100 million sales, the Xbox and Gamecube were within a couple of million sales of each other worldwide (about 24 million to 21 millon).
Looking at the figures it is clear to see that there has not been a true 'battle' between consoles since the era of the SNES and the Megadrive - Sony has dominated the market and outsold its nearest rival by 4:1
The current generation of hardware makes for a much more interesting battle as it is far harder to determine which console will emerge as the overall leader. Xbox 360 has an early lead but will struggle to attract support from both Japanese developers and consumers. PS3 is built upon the success of Playstation and PS2 and has Bluray but consequently has a mammoth price tag and has yet to demonstrate superiority over Xbox 360. Meanwhile, the Wii appeals to many gamers as a second console and has some wonderfully inventive titles lined up - but in households only able to afford one console, it may struggle to be chosen over either Xbox 360 or PS3 due to its positioning purely as a games machine...
Whatever happens, it looks like interesting times ahead...-Oliver Davies |
