| 02.20.2007Piracy and episodic games To combine two issues that have been discussed recently, I believe that episodic gaming could help to reduce piracy. As mentioned in other reader's letters, I also find it difficult to find the time to play games these days, and recently gave away Twilight Princess because I just don't have the time to play that length of game. Understandably, I don't want to spend £40 on a game, when on average I'll play it for about 3-4 hours at the most.
So I am a quite unashamed pirate when the chance arises, despite working in this industry and basically receiving commission for the sales my company's games achieve. Having recently played Sam and Max, I found it's length to be perfect for my needs, and didn't even slightly mind paying £4 to play it. It moves games from the place in my mind that deals with significant purchases to be budgeted for, to the part of my mind that deals with buying lunch, or getting a taxi home after a night out.
I am more comfortable with games knowing their place in my life, and I think that's something we all tend to forget the customer might want when we have spent the best part of two years perfecting our latest effort.-Sam Hackett |
