Rock on, Mr. Spector
In "All For Games: An Interview with Warren Spector", Mr. Spector hit on some resonating points. He says that our game content is pretty immature because both developers and players don't expect much. I agree completely, and it's time for everyone in our business to admit this fault.

It's obvious that, as an industry, we have horrible taste in media and art. We don't read, watch good movies, or have an interest in the fine arts. Gamasutra's Game Development Gallery profiles all types of developers, but most of them pick cheesy fantasy/sci-fi stories as their favorite novels and obscure anime for their favorite movies. Seriously, this isn't about snobbery or my personal tastes. But our games will continue to suffer as long as developers shut themselves off from real art.

Ernest Adams was right when he said that game development has no high art of its own. Thousands of years of history have left us a great legacy; from it we can glean what's important. And it's not "being the last space marine on a space station." We won't evolve as long as we go for what is superficially cool.

I sympathize with Mr. Spector's position, as it's hard to criticize the tastes of colleagues. But unfortunately we're an industry fueled by Buffy the Vampire Slayer and manga. We need to upgrade our input before we can expect to be taken seriously as artists, because the rest of the world does read and does care about art. Rock on, Mr. Spector.
