Industry veteran John Romero, co-founder of Id Software and designer on classic titles such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, has revealed the first details of his new studio, first hinted at in September of 2005.

The previously unnamed studio will be known as Slipgate Ironworks, and is based in the California Bay Area near Redwood City. The company’s new website indicates that the studio will specialize in massively multiplayer online games, with its first project already having received funding from an unnamed party.

As part of the new expansion for Slipgate Ironworks, and the source of this new story, the studio is currently advertising in the Gamasutra jobs section itself for a number of positions including Concept Artist, Senior Game Designer, and Mid-Level Gameplay Programmer.

Romero’s long career in the industry has seen many peaks and troughs, with his departure from Id Software leading him to co-found the ill-fated Ion Storm studio, where he worked on the infamous Daikatana before founding his own mobile games company, Monkeystone, and then joining Midway to work on Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows.

His abrupt departure from Midway in July 2005 has still never been fully explained, but the formation of Slipgate Ironworks is the first formal step back into the industry since that time.
