Obsidian Brings Sega's Alien To Life

Following the recent news that it had acquired the license to 20th Century Fox's popular sci-fi/horror series Alien, Sega has announced that developer Obsidian will create a next-gen RPG based on the film.

News of involvement from Obsidian (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2) first came from a now-modified copyright disclaimer on the game series' teaser site, which also named developer Gearbox (Brothers in Arms), who presumably will be handling Alien's first-person shooter release also planned by Sega.

Sega's official release naming Obsidian as the developer of the Aliens RPG notes that the developer will build on the film series' 'distinctive look and feel' to create an 'entirely different and unique Alien experience.'

The Aliens RPG will be developed for the PC as well as next-gen consoles, and likely is still years from release, with Sega originally saying the first game based on the license will not appear until 2008.

It's not yet clear whether work continues on the Obsidian's previously announced RPG based on an original IP, which Sega had agreed to publish in March of this year, or if it has been postponed to give priority to Alien.

Said Sega of America president Simon Jeffery, "With Obsidian Entertainment's development pedigree, they were our first choice to bring the Alien franchise to the RPG universe. They are the only developer for us that could effectively combine the Alien mythology with compelling RPG gameplay to create the ultimate Alien experience."
