SCEA: No Announcement Of Redesigned PSP

Countering recent online reports of a 'smaller, lighter' PSP being confirmed at Sony’s PSP in Education conference, SCEA's Dave Karraker has told Gamasutra the comments were simply 'general context' regarding the nature of consumer electronics, and no PSP redesign has been announced.

The comments were made by Sony's UK managing director Ray Maguire at the conference, which focused on using PSPs in mainstream education. Maguire told the education specialists that the PSP in its current form is merely the "first iteration," and that, as with its previous consoles, a "smaller, lighter" system would be introduced in the future.

When questioned on the redesign, according to a gamesindustry.biz report, Maguire simply added that while the rest of the design might be altered, the PSP's current screen size was "fixed," but had no additional information regarding a date on which redesign might be released.

Though the comments seem to echo wide industry speculation, specifically from a number of sources at last week's Game Developers Conference as reported by Lazard's Colin Sebastian in his most recent notes, SCEA senior director of communications Dave Karraker has told Gamasutra not to take Maguire too literally.

"Ray's comments regarding decreasing the size of the PSP," said Karraker, "were made in the general context that almost all consumer electronics shrink over time as advances are made in the technology to shrink the components used in manufacture."

"We have not," he added, "made any announcement regarding any new PSP hardware changes."
