Second Number One For Kingdom Hearts II In Japan

Square Enix has secured their second number one with Kingdom Hearts II, with the Special Edition style Final Mix+ on PlayStation 2 returning the title to the number one spot after the original release at the end of 2005. At that time the game sold over 725,000, with the first week total of the new version coming in at 173,000.

Sales in general have picked up slightly this week, with the second highest new entry being a follow up to what is known in Europe as English Training. The latest Touch! Generations title on the Nintendo DS entered as high as number three, with almost 50,000 units sold.

Just below it at number four was Bandai Namco’s latest Digimon game on the Nintendo DS with a creditable 48,000 unit sales. The publisher also enjoyed success with the latest Tamagotchi title for the Nintendo DS at number six, although the title has not yet exhibited quite the level of popularity as the Corner Shop series, with just over 44,000 unit sales.

The final new entry in the top ten is the latest in Konami’s Pro Baseball Spirits series on PlayStation 2, with just over 41,161 unit sales. The PlayStation 3 version of the game – the only PlayStation 3 title in the top thirty – enters the chart at number twenty.

Also of note is the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 3, published in Japan by Spike, which entered at number twenty-six. The relative success of the title has again shown that World War II themed games are by far the most popular style of first person shoot ‘em-up in Japan - where even Medal of Honor: Rising Sun proved a sizeable hit on the PlayStation 2.

(Hardware sales date for the week in Japan will be added to this news item shortly.)
