Ubisoft Confirms Internally Developed Far Cry Sequel

French publisher and developer Ubisoft has announced plans to release Far Cry 2, the official sequel to 2004’s acclaimed first-person shooter, in Spring 2008 for the PC.

While the original Far Cry was developed by independent German development studio Crytek (Crysis), this latest title in the franchise is being handled instead by Ubisoft’s own Montreal studio. Ubisoft acquired the rights to the Far Cry IP in March 2006.

The game marks the latest in the Far Cry franchise, which includes not only the PC original and its well received-Xbox conversion, but also Far Cry Instincts Predator for the Xbox 360 and Far Cry Vengeance for the Wii, though the latter has been generally panned by critics.

Additionally, while Ubisoft has announced very few details about this latest game so far, the company has revealed that Far Cry 2 will be featured in the upcoming October issue of PC Gamer.

"Far Cry marked the beginning of a new era for shooters. An era of gorgeous graphics and of advanced artificial intelligence,” declared Tony Key, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "We are confident that Far Cry 2 will have the same impact again on the FPS genre landscape.”
