Saling The World: World in Conflict Makes Chart Topping Debut

Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from September 20th, 2007, find a new PC software sales leader in Sierra's World in Conflict, which debuts as a top seller in the U.S. and the UK. Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded.

This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows:

Nintendo Wii
North America: 1. Wii Play (Nintendo), 2. Carnival Games (Global Star), 3. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Nintendo), 4. MySims (EA Games), 5. Mario Party 8 (Nintendo).

Japan: 1. Mario Strikers Charged (Nintendo), 2. Mario Party 8 (Nintendo), 3. Wii Sports (Nintendo), 4. Sengoku Musou Katana (Koei), 5. Hajimete no Wii (Nintendo).

UK: 1. Super Paper Mario (Nintendo), 2. MySims (EA Games), 3. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (EA Sports), 4. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, 5. Wii Play (Nintendo).

Carnival Games continues to pick up chart momentum following a successful debut earlier this month, and manages to outpace heavy-hitters like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and the just-released MySims in this week's U.S. sales results. The budget-priced minigame compilation could soon rival long-time chart topper Wii Play in future weeks, assuming that consumer demand holds up. In Japan, Mario Strikers Charged makes its long-awaited debut after finding success in both the U.S. and Europe in months prior, and ranks as this week's top seller.

Xbox 360
North America: 1. BioShock (2K Games), 2. Skate (EA Games), 3. Gears of War (Microsoft), 4. Madden NFL 08 (EA Sports), 5. Eternal Sonata (Namco Bandai).

Japan: 1. The IdolM@ster (Namco), 2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Spike), 3. Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume (Namco), 4. Dead Rising -- Xbox 360 Platinum Collection (Capcom), 5. Hitman: Blood Money (Spike).

UK: 1. BioShock (2K Games), 2. Blue Dragon (Microsoft), 3. Stranglehold (Midway), 4. Medal of Honor: Airborne (EA Games), 5. Gears of War (Microsoft).

BioShock's reign atop the Xbox 360 sales charts will soon come to an end, as presale numbers for all three editions of the soon-to-be-released Halo 3 currently outperform the sales of all available Xbox 360 titles in the United States, Europe, and Japan. In the meantime, EA's Skate makes an impressive chart debut in the #2 U.S. spot this week, while Namco Bandai's anticipated RPG Eternal Sonata joins the fray at fifth place. The IdolM@ster rises back up the chart to take the top spot this week in Japan, meanwhile, as a discounted Trusty Bell continues to rank as one of the platform's more popular choices.

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Heavenly Sword (SCEA), 2. Warhawk (SCEA), 3. Resistance: Fall of Man (SCEA), 4. Madden NFL 08 (EA Sports), 5. DiRT (Codemasters).

Japan: 1. Blade Storm: Hyakunen Sensou (Koei), 2. Wangan Midnight (Genki), 3. Gundam Musou (Bandai), 4. Minna no Golf 5 (SCEI), 5. Ridge Racer 7 (Namco).

UK: 1. Resistance: Fall of Man (SCEE), 2. Warhawk (SCEE), 3. Heavenly Sword (SCEE), 4. MotorStorm (SCEE), 5. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (EA Sports).

Despite being released almost three months after its Xbox 360 counterpart, the PlayStation 3 port of DiRT sees a strong sales performance this week, finishing fifth in U.S. PS3 software sales. In Japan, Genki's Wangan Midnight once again finds itself among the week's top PS3 titles after dropping out of chart range shortly after its debut in July, thanks to a discount in price by 40 percent.

PlayStation 2
North America: 1. Madden NFL 08 (EA Sports), 2. Guitar Hero II Bundle (Activision), 3. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s (Activision), 4. Growlanser: Heritage of War (Atlus), 5. God of War II (SCEA).

Japan: 1. Kiniro no Corda 2 Anchor Premium Box (Koei), 2. Metal Gear 20th Anniversary: Metal Gear Solid Collection (Konami), 3. A.C.E. Another Century's Episode 3 The Final (Banpresto), 4. Nanatsu Iro * Drops Pure!! (Media Quest), 5. Tales of Fandom Vol. 2 -- Luke Version (Namco).

UK: 1. SingStar Rock Ballads (SCEE), 2. Rugby 08 (EA Sports), 3. SingStar '90s (SCEE), 4. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (Square Enix), 5. SingStar Pop Hits (SCEE).

Kiniro no Corda 2 Anchor Premium Box tops the PS2 weekly sales chart in Japan in its first week of release, as fans appear eager to snap up copies of Koei's latest expansion to the popular adventure series. Meanwhile, new RPG releases continue to make a strong impression on the United States' PS2 sales charts on a weekly basis, as Atlus's recently released Growlanser: Heritage of War finds itself among the week's top-selling titles. .hack//G.U. vol. 3//Redemption drops out of the top five after a promising debut last week, however, as Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 barely misses a chart return with a sixth-place finish.

PC
North America: 1. World in Conflict (Sierra), 2. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (EA Games), 3. BioShock (2K Games), 4. World of Warcraft (Blizzard), 5. Medal of Honor: Airborne (EA Games).

Japan: 1. Hatsune Miku (Cripton Future Media), 2. Nobunaga no Yabou: Kakushin -- Power-Up Kit (Koei), 3. The Sims 2: Seasons! Data Set (EA Games), 4. Final Fantasy XI All-in-One Pack 2006 (Square Enix), 5. Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday Armageddon (Cyber Front).

UK: 1. World in Conflict (Sierra UK), 2. The Sims 2: Bon Voyage (EA Games), 3. Medieval II: Total War -- Kingdoms (Sega), 4. Medal of Honor: Airborne (EA Games), 5. BioShock (2K Games).

BioShock and The Sims 2: Bon Voyage find their former chart dominance overthrown by World in Conflict, which takes the top PC sales spot in North America and the UK in its debut week. Japan's chart, on the other hand, sees the return of Final Fantasy XI, as anticipation builds for the upcoming expansion pack Final Fantasy XI: Altana no Kamihei.

Nintendo DS
North America: 1. Brain Age 2 (Nintendo), 2. Brain Age (Nintendo), 3. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 4. Pokemon Diamond (Nintendo), 5. MySims (EA Games).

Japan: 1. Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Toki no Tankentai (Nintendo), 2. Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Yami no Tankentai (Nintendo), 3. Taiko no Tatsujin DS: Touch de Dokodon! (Namco), 4. Katekyoo Hitman Reborn!! DS Flame Rumble Kaien Ring Soudatsuen! (Takara Tomy), 5. Facening de Hyoujou Yutaka ni Inshou Up: Otona no DS Kao Training (Nintendo).

UK: 1. More Brain Training from Dr. Kawashima (Nintendo), 2. Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (Nintendo), 3. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo), 4. Pokemon Diamond (Nintendo), 5. Cooking Mama (505 Games).

MySims barely manages to break in to the DS top five in the United States this week, though mainstays like Pokemon Diamond and New Super Mario Bros. continue to pull in the biggest sales numbers overall in both the U.S. and Europe. Not many changes can be seen in Japan this week either, though the recent Katekyoo Hitman Reborn!! DS Flame Rumble Kaien Ring Soudatsuen! finds its audience with a fourth place chart debut.

PlayStation Portable
North America: 1. Jeanne D'Arc (SCEA), 2. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (Rockstar), 3. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Capcom), 4. Madden NFL 08 (EA Sports), 5. Star Wars Battlefront II (LucasArts).

Japan: 1. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Square Enix), 2. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus (Konami), 3. Fate/Tiger Colosseum -- Limited Edition (Capcom), 4. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Capcom), 5. Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus Deluxe Pack (Konami).

UK: 1. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories (Rockstar), 2. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (Capcom), 3. Dungeons & Dragons Tactics (Atari), 4. Mind Quiz (Ubisoft), 5. Brian Lara 2007 Pressure Play (Codemasters).

Though Amazon has since restocked Monster Hunter Freedom 2 after the title's resulting chart absence last week, consumer favor has since shifted in favor of Jeanne D'Arc, which tops PSP sales for the second week in a row. Meanwhile, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus charges up the PSP chart in Japan in its debut week, but falls short of reigning champion Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which remains the region's best-selling title across all platforms for the second week running.
