Virtual Console Adds Sega Master System Support

Nintendo's Virtual Console for its Wii hardware is expanding to include support for the Sega Master System this February in Japan, with its 1986 game based on the popular Fist of the North Star anime series to be the first release.

Fist of the North Star will cost 600 points ($6) on the store. Its release will be followed by classic shooter Fantasy Zone, which also dates to 1986, at a price of 500 points ($5).

Support for the Master System will include support for other Sega consoles, one Japan-only, with which it is compatible: the Sega Mark III and '90s portable Game Gear.

While U.S. support for the Master System has not yet been announced, Sega's Master System and Game Gear hardware were both released in the West, along with many titles - including Sega classics such as Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Shinobi, and Phantasy Star - making a debut for the emulation fairly likely outside Japan.

The last systems announced to be added to the Virtual Console in Japan were SNK's Neo Geo and the MSX computer. Though Neo Geo title sales began late last year, the MSX has yet to debut on the system in any territory.
