EA, Crytek Announce Crysis Warhead PC Sequel

Developer Crytek has announced Crysis Warhead, an EA-published follow-up and parallel story to its 2007 first-person shooter, Crysis. Built on an enhanced and optimized version of Crytek’s CryENGINE 2 technology, Crysis Warhead will be released exclusively for PCs this fall.

The decision to ship Crysis Warhead for only PCs runs counter to statements Crytek president and CEO Cevat Yerli made in April with Croation consumer website PC Play, in which he claimed that the company will no longer produce PC-exclusive titles: “We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis... It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won’t have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in the future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusively anymore.”

As with the original Crysis, Crysis Warhead will have players taking on the role of a United States Delta Force operator with a Nanosuit, this time Sergeant Sykes, also known as Psycho, one of the character’s introduced in the previous title. The single-player campaign’s story runs parallel to the events in Crysis, showing Psycho’s perspective and allowing players access to new weapons and vehicles.

Though no details have been revealed about online features, Crysis Warhead will also feature new multiplayer content. This will be the first game to be developed by Crytek’s new studio in Budapest, Hungary, established in 2007.

Said Yerli on Crysis Warhead: “We were very pleased with the reception of Crysis from both gamers and media after our launch last year. That being said, one of the key principles of our studio is to always raise the bar. With Warhead, we are focusing on refining our storytelling and game performance, while also delivering more of the visually stunning graphics and immersive, free-roaming gameplay everyone loved in Crysis."
