The son of author Mario Puzo, who wrote the novels and screenplay on which the trilogy of The Godfather movies are based, is to sue Paramount Pictures over revenues derived from Electronic Arts’ 2006 video game adaptation of the property.
According to a Reuters report the lawsuit has been filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, demanding at least $1 million in damages for breach of contract. Mario Puzo died in 1999, leaving his estate to his children.
It is claimed that Paramount agreed a deal in 1992 giving Puzo a share of revenues from any subsequent audio-visual products connected with the movies. The deal was apparently struck due to the low fee originally paid for the original film rights.
News of the lawsuit coincides with confirmation from Electronic Arts that a second game based on the movie series is in development – although a follow-up was originally discussed by the company in early 2007.
