Ontario Establishes $1.15 Billion Fund To Incent Game Developers

Ontario's Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has set aside $1.15 billion to fund digital media, game and tech companies who create jobs, use "green" manufacturing processes and who move or create a location in the province.

'The Next Generation of Jobs Fund' guarantees a decision within 45 days to businesses that apply, and also offers cash payments and tax incentives to qualifiers.

The program is often supported by other venture capital for businesses looking to utilize Ontario’s R&D, innovation programs, facilities and workforce to expand their operations.

Ontario claims the "most generous R&D tax credits of any G7 country," promising overall savings up to 60 percent, and says its incentive programs to attract digital media companies aim to help the province in "dominating the world when it comes to creating video games."

Despite the relative generosity of Ontario's incentive programs, a new report recently called for increased tax credits and more reliable funding to support the 850 developers currently employed in the region at mid-sized console developers and small PC studios including Unreal Tournament developer Digital Extremes and Dragon’s Lair 3D developer Digital Leisure. The province generated only $70 million in video game revenue in 2006.

Along with this program, there are numerous other government incentives available to locate a game development studio in Ontario, and in particular, Northern Ontario. This is true whether you are a large established studio looking for a new location, or a small start up company looking to build for the future. Parties looking to expand or relocate game development efforts to Northern Ontario can certainly contact me personally for more information on this subject. My name is Dwayne Hammond and I am the strategic advisor for Canada's only masters degree in computer game technology here at Algoma University. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at...

Virtually worthless. To be eligible, your company must "create or retain at least 100 jobs, or invest $25 million over five years".

Basically, this only helps big companies become bigger. How many developers employ over 100 people?

how many developers spend 25 million over five years. definitely not digital extremes. haha...let alone fhe majority of devs out there. this is to lure publishers if your info is right Chris. No dev is going to spend that kind of money on a startup team and bet their fragile reputation on the new team.

Chris,

I'm curious where you got that information from. If it's true, then I can see how it could be interpreted as worthless.

and yes Chris seems to be correct, those are the criteria.
